300 issues of 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳

Issue

Title

300 issues of 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ Weekly

91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ stands up for the oppressed people's point of view. It has a perspective that is based on justice for the individual. It presents the facts that are not forthcoming in the mainstream papers and provides excellent coverage on the situation and troubles in Ireland. It presents the issues that I know about in a fair way, so there is a 90-100% chance that this is the case for other issues, which is more than can be said for other papers.

Tim Carter
Australian Aid for Ireland

GLW is a paper in a million. Its coverage of local and international issues is unique, in-depth, informative and refreshing. I can't live without my GLW.

Congratulations on reaching your 300th edition. All credit to you for championing the political, social and environmental issues, that are the life blood of the struggle for Indigenous people and active minority groups. You have been instrumental in their unity and solidarity.

Yaluritja (Clarrie Isaacs, JP)
1997 Racism No! candidate in WA state elections

91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ plays an indisputable role in providing searching analysis of those social issues that capitalism is incapable of coping with such as the alarming and ever widening gap between rich and poor. Difficult as it may be under present circumstances, just step back and think for a fleeting moment and ponder on the herculean task it would represent if, at the end of each week, there was no 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ to fall back on.

With fraternal greetings to 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ and its dedicated readership ... may it go on forever.

Bill Donnelly
Retired wharfie and life-long communist, Darwin

Congratulations. I praise the commitment and dedication of your staff and members. I appreciate the professionalism in which articles have been presented, in particular the coverage of East Timor issues. All the success for your future issues.

John dos Santos
East Timorese activist

91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ is one of the few alternative media outlets in Australia that provides Australian people access to informed information and critique.

Tim Doyle
President of Conservation Council of South Australia and senior lecturer at the Mawson Graduate Centre for Environmental Studies.

Congratulations on works achieved. Information is power but wisdom is life. Those who care must keep caring, those who feel should keep the faith, each of us has an equal part to play — Love, Life & Liberty.

Throughout its 300 issues, 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ has played a crucial role in supporting and involving people in progressive campaigns in Adelaide. Without GLW's strong stance against racism, and in defence of people before profits, the fight for a just world would be severely weakened. The Adelaide branches of the Democratic Socialist Party and Resistance congratulate 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ Weekly and look forward to the next 300 issues.

Philippa Stanford, Democratic Socialist Party
and Samuel King, Resistance

300th issue congratulations to all at the 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ Weekly. Thanks for reporting the news from Bougainville. Keep up the great work, keep spreading the news and most of all keep Australian troops out of Bougainville.

Congratulations GLW on your 300th issue. GLW is a vital source of alternative media, filling the void of balanced coverage on environmental and social justice issues.

Michelle Grady
Executive officer Conservation Council of South Australia

Congratulations for reaching 300 issues. I enjoy the depth of analysis in each issue.

Janet MacLean
Vice-president Newcastle Trades Hall Council

I would like to warmly congratulate 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ Weekly on your 300th edition. GLW has engaged seriously with putting women's issues on the socio-political agenda. It helps ensure that women from all 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ of our society are represented with honesty and accuracy, and continues the struggle for our emancipation.

Angie Hartwig
Women's Refuge Group (WA)

Happy Birthday GLW! Without you how would anyone suspect that there could be more to a newspaper than the royal family, sport and court reports?

Mary Heath
Activist, Adelaide

In a time when Packer and Murdoch dominate the nation's media it is always good to see street press captivate and educate a nationwide audience. Education is the key to our success.

Mat Hines
Student Environmental Action Network and University of Tasmania Greens

At a time when democracy in Australian states is being undermined and Australia, in social justice issues, is leaping backwards, it is a great reassurance that there are some things that can't be squashed. Keep going, 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳!

Cath Hughes
Researcher, Tasmanian Greens and grassroots activist

Congratulations on the 300th issue of Australia's most enlightened and socially responsible newspaper. Staff and students at the Hunter Christian Institute for Social Justice and Research highly value your expose of the oppressive capitalist system.

Hunter Christian Institute for Social Justice and Research.

A paper that can accurately report the struggles and issues of young people has a lot going for it. But when you add 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳'s role in actively building those struggles (and all other struggles for justice), it really has made itself indispensable. Keep up the struggle, 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳. We'll be right alongside you!

91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ Weekly is one of the best alternative newspapers around, and its web site is a valuable resource for radicals everywhere. Congratulations on reaching 300 issues, and still being able to innovate and grow.

The editors, International Viewpoint (monthly magazine of the Fourth International)

I have always enjoyed reading 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ Weekly. It has been consistent in covering the Palestinian question and the struggle of the Palestinian people for freedom and independence. Congratulations and best wishes to the editorial collective.

Ali Kazak
Head of the General Palestinian Delegation to Australia

Congratulations to 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ Weekly on its 300th issue. The Budapest Discussion Forum 1997 continued the dialogue between new leftist forces of the west and the east. We felt that this left, facing both nationalist and liberal distortions of socialism, has started to recover from its low point. We were pleased to note that the sectarian isolation is starting to disappear, and a new political culture among the left is developing. The conference was a very positive experience. The nationalist and racist revival is a consequence of the neo-liberal new world economic order, which the left must unite against and fight.

91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ Weekly is useful for those of us in Hungary who have access to it. We don't know any other newspaper which succeeds in uniting and representing in everyday life the environmental questions and socialism.

Our cooperation with the Democratic Socialist Party and 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ Weekly is ongoing and we're very proud of that. Best wishes.

Tamas Krausz
Left Alternative and founding editor of Eszmelet magazine, Hungary

Comradely greetings to 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ Weekly from Alternatives magazine in Russia. We think that the cooperation between democratic socialist scholars and political militants is extremely important in today's

modern global world where we can and must realise an international alternative to imperialism.

We want to continue our cooperation in the sphere of exchange of information, common theoretical debates, and would be really happy to publish in Alternatives the main debates taking place on the Australian left.

Alexander Buzgalin
Chief editor Alternatives; professor, Moscow State University; and chairperson, Scholars for Democracy and Socialism

Glad to hear about the 300th. The success of a fine independent journal is very welcome news in an era of narrowing of the public arena by "neo-liberal" assaults on democracy, media mega-corporations, and other means. Encouraging news as well. Congratulations on the 300th, and best wishes for many more, and new achievements ahead.

Noam Chomsky

GLW's support in covering the Indonesia and East Timor solidarity campaigns carried out by ASIET and other solidarity groups is invaluable. Every week the news gets out to thousands of supporters. But of no less valuable is the overall coverage given by GLW to all issues and all struggles. Further unification of all struggles against injustice here in Australia and overseas will be the only way to bring down the system which oppresses us all and causes so much suffering in the world.

Max Lane
National coordinator, Action in Picturesolidarity with Indonesia and East Timor and Democratic Socialist foreign affairs spokesperson

It's always a pleasure to pick up 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳, leaf through it, pick out the articles to read and appreciate their quality and the breadth of coverage, along with the commitment of the comrades involved in making the paper a useful activist tool.

For us 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ is, first, an information tool that fosters a better understanding of events in parts of the world about which news is very scarce in Europe. But it's also an instrument of discussion, for exchanging experiences with the comrades of the Democratic Socialist Party — a discussion that began at the beginning of the 1970s and has continued fruitfully, both during times of political convergence but also through at times of debate

This discussion and collaboration has developed further since the emergence of the Party of Communist Refoundation (PRC), which Green left has always followed with close political interest. Best wishes for future good work!

Franco Turigliatto
Editor Bandiera Rossa (published by Fourth

International supporters) and central committee member, PRC, Italy

91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ Weekly offers a different perspective on industrial dispute reporting at the Hunter Valley mine No. 1. It offers well researched and incisive analysis, better than the mainstream press. It digs deeper than the mainstream press, rather than grabbing a quick headline.

Mick Kelly
Vice-president, Northern Districts, Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union, mining and energy division

Congratulations for your 300th anniversary. The Korean workers cooperate with all those people who are working for human rights. I hope that you keep publishing 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ Weekly for the workers and progressive people.

Jong-Sae Oh
President of the organisation committee, Korea Federation of Hyundai Group Workers Union, affiliated to the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions

So what if the GLW isn't always right. That's why I read it. Congratulations on progressing to 300, and being the defiant alternative to the prejudices of the mainstream media.

Bob Brown
Australian Greens Senator

Rather than rely on mainstream media, I appreciate 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ Weekly as a forum for the other side of the story and where anti-racist activists can get their points of view through. Congratulations on reaching 300.

Mingli Wanjurri
Aboriginal rights activist, Perth

For news behind the news in Australia and overseas and information the capitalist press fails to publish 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ Weekly fills the gap.

Judy Morley
Nurses union activist, Newcastle

GLW has become the most comprehensive weekly in Australia in the dissemination of

information about the present situation in the struggle of the Maubere people of East Timor for total independence.

Harold Moucho
Fretilin

Congratulations to all those who have made 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ Weekly a success. This weekly is an informative and useful source of alternative views and progressive analysis. On behalf of Partai Rakyat Malaysia (PRM — Malaysian People's Party), I wish to express our solidarity and hope it will achieve much success in the future.

Dr Syed Husin Ali
President, PRM, Malaysia

As an activist involved in the struggle for the freedom of the Maubere people which has been stolen for the last 22 years, I am proud that 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ Weekly consistently published reports on the sufferings and the struggle of the Maubere people. I am sure that 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ Weekly will always be the best forum for the Maubere people and Indonesian people. I write this in the spirit that 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ Weekly will continue to pack a real punch!

A luta continua!

Naldo Rai
East Timorese writer and activist

In South Africa today we are witnessing the death of the alternative press that was so important in the struggle against apartheid and capitalism in the 1980s. This is one of the ironies of the democratic transition in this country.

The survival of the 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ is not only cause for celebration for socialists in South Africa. It is also cause for hope. It teaches us that as long as injustice and oppression continue, history will never end!

Congratulations to 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ and the militants who made it all possible!

Oupa Lehulere
South Africa

This week 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ is publishing its 300th issue. This in an achievement which both the comrades from the DSP and the left in general should be proud of because 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ has raised awareness about the crimes of capitalism and the need for a socialist revolution.

Among the comrades of the PRD, SMID, PPBI, STN and Jaker, Green left Weekly is no stranger. We all feel we must read GLW because it provides so much information, lessons and debates about the left and the revolution. GLW frequently analyses Indonesian events and gives much reportage to our activities. Unfortunately, the

distribution of GLW is still confined to the members of the PRD and its mass organisations. As a legal publication, it is possible for GLW to be distributed more widely in Indonesia.

We are very proud of GLW because it is a left paper that has a dynamic (flexible) editorial line. This is very rare among the papers of the movement. It would be beneficial if we can establish special cooperation between 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ and Pembebasan (Liberation), a publication of the PRD, and the publications of the mass organisations affiliated to the PRD.

In the name of the comrades of the PRD. Congratulations to 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳!

Spread the ideals of the Revolution! Overthrow Suharto with a people's uprising!

Mirah Mahardika
Coordinator, central leadership council, People's Democratic Party, Jakarta

91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ Weekly is a refreshing read from a grassroots activist perspective which makes a reality check essential when Packer and Murdoch control the information flow.

Peg Putt
Member of the House of Assembly, Tasmanian Greens

It's with great pleasure that I send warm, revolutionary greetings to 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ Weekly on the occasion of its 300th issue.

GLW has been a source of both information and inspiration far beyond Australia. It has shown that an openly Marxist paper can be politically focused yet not sectarian, informative without indulging in crude propaganda or sloganeering, tied to a party project without becoming a horse organ, committed yet critical.

As both a journalistic project and a political effort, may GLW inspire other such newspapers on the five continents.

Peter Gellert
GLW correspondent, Mexico City

Even when the mainstream parties have been uncertain or unwilling to go public, the 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ has maintained a strong support for native title and social justice. That's the sort of diversity of media we need.

Frank Brennan
Jesuit priest and social justice lawyer

Thanks to GLW for national coverage of actions, debates and discussion in the student movement. Not to mention your help in building the actions. Keep it up for another 300!

No fees! No cuts!

Kate Habgood and Ray Fulcher
Joint education officers, Melbourne University Student Union 1988

At international gatherings, I'm asked occasionally where my journalistic writings are published. I'm pleased and proud to reply that a lot of these articles first appear on the pages of 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ Weekly.

The way people react when told this is mostly very positive. Even if they've never read GLW themselves, they often know it by reputation as one of the most interesting, clear-headed and well-produced sources of news and analysis of which the world left can boast.

For me personally, GLW is not just an effective and sympathetic vehicle through which I can put my thoughts around, but also a source of information and insights I'd find it hard to do without. Congratulations on the 300th issue.

Boris Kagarlitsky
Russia

Congratulations to 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ Weekly for keeping up the good fight. Communities need to be informed, that's why papers like yours are so important. Keep up the fight.

Jenny Munro
Urban Land Council and National Aboriginal History and Heritage Council, Sydney

GLW's perspective on industrial issues isn't bound by ACTU or ALP dogma. When reporting on union activities, GLW reports from the point of view of "on the ground" union organising, which is our style of organising in the CFMEU.

GLW is the independent voice that is needed for workers.

Martin Kingham
State secretary, Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union, construction division (VIC)

GLW is an invaluable contribution to the alternative media, especially in terms of social justice and human rights issues. I see it as a publication which gives a voice to individuals and groups who otherwise have no access to a public forum.

GLW is an important alternative to mainstream thinking.

From time to time, the Western entrepreneurs who put out Russia's best-known English-language publication, the Moscow Times, congratulate themselves on producing a "newspaper of record", deserving to be compared with the Washington Post and New York Times.

Or perhaps that was the New York Post and Washington Times D

Whatever the case, the Moscow Times over the years has certainly set the odd record. Such as for the number of times it has described the less moribund bits of the Russian economy as "vibrant", or referred to Yeltsin's overthrowing of the Russian constitution and blowing away of the parliament as a "revolt by parliamentary hard-liners".

91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ Weekly is a newspaper of different records. Such as for the number of fearless attacks on the foreign policy infamies of "its" local bourgeoisie (someone mentioned East Timor?). Or, for unsparingly pointing out the evasions and treacheries of labour fakers.

That's not to mention another record GLW has set: for unstinting support, over many years, of a self-exiled correspondent. Best wishes on issue No. 300!

At a time when student media is being attacked so savagely by right-wing governments across Australia it's great to see an independent voice still going strong. Congratulations to 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ Weekly on 300 issues of green-left independent writing!

Peter Barker
President, Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology Student Union

You can truly be proud of your massive achievement in keeping your non-profit newspaper alive over the past seven years, in the face of insurmountable odds. GLW has played an enormous role in publicising the struggle of many workers, indigenous peoples and green organisations.

As the planet approaches the 21st century, the need for a strong and active alternative media becomes more and more pressing. Your constant coverage of, and attacks upon racism and sexism can be applauded. These evils are normally ignored or justified by the capitalist media.

The role you have played in publicising SAMWU's struggle against privatisation of services such as water and refuse is much appreciated. You have assisted us in our worldwide campaign against the environment-, community- and worker-unfriendly multinational privateers.

It is organisations such as GLW that have emerged as dedicated players in the worldwide struggle against neo-liberalism and globalisation.

Congratulations on your 300th issue! Forward to socialist media!

The 120,000 members of the South African Municipal Workers Union

91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ has consistently supported struggles for human rights and social justice in Latin America, both by providing the information on such issues which the mainstream press won't provide and by supporting the solidarity movement in Australia. Congratulations on another milestone.

Neville Spencer
National coordinator, Committees In Solidarity with Latin America and the Caribbean

Congratulations on 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ Weekly's 300th issue. Our staff, lecturers and students find GLW an excellent source of

information on some parts of the world we otherwise would hardly hear about (such as Bougainville) and of stimulating analyses of other regions better known to us (such as Russia and South Africa). And it's always

nice when a left paper arrives with colour and life to it.

We also appreciate the contribution you are making to broad-based dialogue and rethinking on the international left. Like GLW, we are trying to push old shibboleths out

of the way in order to help radical activists come to grips with new developments. While different people come to different conclusions, the process of rethinking together is bound to be fruitful. So we hope to welcome friends from Australia at our courses and seminars.

Congratulations! Thank you 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ Weekly! No other medium has been so consistent, systematic, informative, supportive, analytical, inspirational and compassionate in reporting about East Timor. No small contribution in a country that seems lost in parochialism and with a government which knowingly turns a blind eye to the immense suffering of our neighbours.

Saskia Kouwenberg
Lismore Friends of East Timor
PO Box 331, Nimbin, NSW 2480

It's clear that GLW is against all the old order. For Indonesia and East Timor issue in particular, GLW dares to print the truth. Australian politicians and Suharto only know how to make profits from Indonesian and East Timorese people. GLW is the only newspaper in Australia which works for justice, truth and for oppressed people around the world.

Congratulations and keep on struggling to build a new world.

Edwin Gozal
International representative, People's Democratic Party (PRD), Indonesia

91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ Weekly is what you would call a positive entity. It is a publication which does not

abuse the print medium and it offers a chance to express and read alternative points of view. It brings people (who recognise the possibility and benefits of change) together and challenges dominant oppressive ideologies from local to global levels.

On a student level, GLW reminds us of the place we have within the structures of this thing we call society. Often, the tendency is there for students to forget the important role they play in defending ourselves against diseases such as capitalism,

"outside" these walls of education.

There are times, when you catch a glimpse of Ray Martin or the Austudy woman is after you, that you begin to lose faith. But then a young man with glasses and greying hair hands you a GLW to read and you feel the determination in each page. How can you then stop trying?

Brad Cleary
Education collective, Southern Cross University (Lismore) Student Representative Council

As socialist activists we can't do without 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ Weekly. It's our best window on the world. No other paper covers the international political scene, the various progressive standpoints on national political issues and the tactics in campaigns for social change from the point of view of workers and the poor.

From issue No. 1 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ has drawn ordinary people into alternative politics. It's a treasure for the future of radical and socialist politics in this country.

Chris Spindler
Democratic Socialist Party, Sydney

The Sydney International Women's Day collective would like to thank 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ Weekly for its support over the last seven years and 300 issues. With GLW's collaboration, we have been able to produce six national broadsheets — a great opportunity to link-up IWD collectives across Australia.

We would also like to congratulate GLW for its coverage of women's issues. It is one of the few papers in Australia that consistently defends women's rights.

We look forward to another 300 issues of GLW.

Sydney International Women's Day Collective, 1998

GLW has provided an invaluable aid to activists in getting information to counter the mainstream media's bias and for campaigns to spread their message and advertise their events.

91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ Weekly is widely read by the trade unions, community organisations, and

various groups in the Philippines. It is, by now, part of the historical material that has contributed to the growth and renewal of the progressive movement in our country. Each issue is eagerly awaited and merits our deep gratitude. Keep it up, 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳!

Sonny Melencio, Philippines

The Workers Health Centre would like to congratulate 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ Weekly on reaching its 300th issue! We appreciate the obvious commitment of all those who contribute to its ongoing success. We look forward to seeing you continue from strength to strength in the future.

The Workers Health Centre has, itself, celebrated an important birthday this year — our 21st! And we are happy to report that we continue to offer a quality range of medical and occupational health and safety services to unions and workers in general, including: occupational medicine; hearing assessment; rehabilitation; workplace safety audits; and training.

Due to the current attacks on workers and their organisations, it is vital that organisations such as the Workers Health Centre, and publications such as 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ Weekly, continue their important work.

91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ is a crucial media outlet to have because so much of the media is controlled by so few people. Media that gives a different perspective on events in the world are an extremely important component of democracy. In the education campaign, GLW gives a refreshing perspective from people involved rather than the regularly distorted image that is published in the Daily Telegraph.

Congratulations on your 300th issue. Your very internationalist paper gets around and is a great help to the activists here. The East Timor and Indonesia activists particularly welcome it. The proposed OECD Multilateral Agreement on Investment shows again how we must to work internationally against the New Right. 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ plays an important role in such battles.

Keith Locke, New Zealand

Revolutionary greetings and congratulations from the South African Communist Party (SACP) on the occasion of 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳'s 300th issue.

In a world where we are constantly bombarded by bourgeois propaganda designed to suppress any critical thinking and instil a sense of hopelessness for the vast majority of humanity, 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ stands out as a beacon of revolutionary hope.

Its incisive reporting, analysis and commentary provide a fundamentally important source of information for those struggling for a world in which mental and material creativity is no longer held hostage to the dictates of the market monster. The SACP and our mass constituency look forward to reading the next 300 issues of 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳!

Long live 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ Weekly! Viva, socialism Viva!

Congratulations on 300 issues of activism and inspiration! 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ is a voice speaking freedom, solidarity and justice in a world liable to forget. Here's to another 300!

Marcus Barber
General secretary, Melbourne University Student Union

When union activists get retrenched — allegedly "in excess" — and replaced by low paid, super-exploited casual staff, newspapers should expose the unlawful discrimination. When unionists stop work to protest and condemn union busting, it should be big news. When workers refuse to cop harassment and lodge discrimination complaints, this resistance deserves coverage. But not for the media magnates who control almost all the news outlets in this country.

Thank you 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ Weekly for covering the determined and ongoing campaigns by both workers and students against the anti-union management at Northern Melbourne Institute of TAFE. You've reported grassroots, defiant struggles for 300 issues. You take the side of freedom fighters everywhere. We know we can count on you to continue to tell our story.

Alison Thorne

Congratulations on reaching 300 issues. 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ remains as one of the few alternative voices in the Australian media. It very existence makes an important statement, and the quality of the journalist is greatly appreciated.

Congratulations on enduring seven years of deadlines in service of your commitment "to make 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ Weekly an accurate, inclusive and strong voice for democracy, justice and the environment". Hugh Esco

We congratulate GLW on the 300th issue. It has been an invaluable tool in building campaigns and struggling for a better world. It is really important in getting out real news, in competition with the sensationalism, parochialism and lies of the local Fairfax "Mockery".

Congratulations on the publication of the 300th issue. As the world lurches deeper into crisis under capitalism it is of vital importance that 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ keeps up its attacks on the rapacious, destructive, iniquitous and almost morally bankrupt socio-economic system. More power to you.

William Dunn

I would like to send my congratulations and express our group's ongoing appreciation for the opportunity that 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ has given to death-row journalist Brandon

Astor Jones, through his "Looking out" column, to speak for the more than 3330 US prisoners who have been condemned to die under the law. As Brandon did not kill anyone, his case highlights the intrinsic injustice of the death penalty.

The fight against capital punishment is never over. As the holes in the social net grow larger, there is an increase in the kinds of crazy and desperate crimes that fuel pro-death penalty propaganda in Australia today. Thank you for maintaining an independent voice against this trend.

Celebrating the 300th edition of 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ Weekly is indeed a meaningful occasion. A

publication such as this one is at the forefront of change because it describes what oppression looks like and provides information on how we can be part of the struggle against it. A paper which is not based on misogynistic principles also helps to reaffirm my daily need to create alternative reactions and experiences to what's going on "out there" and "within". The first section I scramble to feast my eyes on is "... and ain't I a woman?", a section where the implications of gender are never trivialised.

Congratulations and thankyou to everyone involved with the publication of GLW. In sisterhood and solidarity,

Nicola Williams
Women's research officer, Flinders University Students Association

Congratulations on your 300th issue. 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ has always supported this station and we wish you all the best for another 300 issues.

4ZZZ is Queensland's oldest FM community radio station and has always been a thorn in the side of the establishment and a voice for the voiceless in Queensland. Among our diverse music programs are shows on women, the youth show, the prisoners' show, peace and environment and news programming. It is pleasing to note that 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ also supports many of the broad groups and issues that have been a core of our programming since its beginning.

The newsroom always awaits the arrival of 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ with anticipation and we read out and follow up many stories found in this important newspaper. Our reporters are encouraged and sometimes do contribute print stories for your paper.

Keep up the good work.

The CFMEU salutes the 300th issue of 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ Weekly and expresses its appreciation for its honest and incisive coverage of our members' struggles. 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ is a valuable contribution to the understanding of issues and struggle. Its moral and practical support, and its working-class solidarity is much appreciated.

The 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ Weekly is an informative left publication in Australia and its 300th issue is a huge achievement. Congratulations and I wish that it becomes even more informative and instructive in the future.

The vicious alliance that has been forged between the Howard government and big business has been consummated on the fabric of brutal oppression and cold-blooded racism. Every belief, moral and value that we have ever honoured; everything that we hold to is now in the most dire jeopardy.

In order to deliver to the dark ilk of the Packers, the Murdochs and the BHPs that drive our economy, Howard needs to crush the workers of this nation. He needs to banish women back to the home where they will again be powerless slaves to a dual society that has been purposely constructed for upper-class men. He needs to achieve the final solution of mass genocide and remove all traces of the Aboriginal tribes from this land and he needs to silence every voice that may ever be raised against him.

One of the most effective voices for the anti-Howard alliance has been 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳. It has given light and hope to many people who have been stripped of place and denied even the most basic liberty.

It has been the comrades and friends of 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ who have continued to lead us forward to do battle with the windmills of injustice and oppression.

Amidst a media fog of manipulative trivia, GLW brings a breath of fresh air like a filtering rainforest.

Warmest congratulations on the 300th issue of 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ Weekly from the Democratic Socialist Party. Our members are proud to be counted among GLW's most loyal and active supporters from the very inception of this important project.

GLW is unquestionably, and by far, the leading progressive paper in Australia, but it has also won a formidable international reputation. Many left activists around the world see this paper as a model and countless others use 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ Weekly as a valuable resource.

91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ Weekly is not just an important asset of the left but a much wider range of progressive and fair-minded people depend on 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ Weekly to hold up their spirits and keep them in touch with progressive campaigns. Amidst the racist push by Pauline Hanson and the Howard government, even more people have told our members while distributing 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ Weekly, "I am glad you are here. Keep up the good work!"

Next year the DSP, together with Resistance, pledge to raise $140,000 for the 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ Weekly fighting fund and our members will strive to help the paper reach an ever broader audience.

John Percy
National secretary, Democratic Socialist Party

Freedom of speech is only possible in a community which respects difference and the right to self-determination, equality and fair-mindedness. Striving to create safe spaces for free expression is essential; congratulations to 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ Weekly for helping this process by promoting activism, fighting oppression and facilitating discussion.

Fiona Whittaker
Women's officer, University of WA Student Guild 1998

In northern Australia 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ Weekly is widely appreciated and much needed in providing an alternative to the mainstream media, and providing accurate and critical analysis on national environmental issues.

Jane Weepers
Campaigns coordinator, Environment Centre NT

Looking forward to the next triple century GL: the first has been an exceptional oasis for those seeking social and environmental justice.

Dr Lynette Dumble
Senior research fellow, History and Philosophy of Science, University of Melbourne

GLW is to be congratulated for its 300th issue. It's an excellent alternative newspaper, and I enjoy reading it and discussing it with my colleagues. Best wishes for the future.

Hughie Williams
Queensland state secretary, Transport Workers Union

I have supported GLW for years. It's a working-class paper. There's no doubt about the vision it stands for: opposition to the capitalist system, the same as myself.

We need to inform and educate people about this. I am active in networking: I wouldn't know what was happening around the left and progressive movement without GLW. 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ is a wonderful support to the environment and green movements.

Bert Nond
Long-time ex-Communist Party of Australia activist and supporter of the Grass Roots Centre, Brisbane

Congratulations 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ on the 300th issue. I pass on the message that: "The homeless Aboriginal people of Darwin thank 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ Weekly for supporting our struggle for shelter and water."

Bill Day
Anthropologist and activist for Aboriginal rights, Darwin

91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ is the best non-establishment, anti-system paper in Australia.

Lou Gugenberger
Convenor, North Brisbane branch, Queensland Greens

I appreciate the way GLW puts the overall environment campaign in context, as opposed to the commercial media. GLW identifies the broader environment causes.

Eleanor Glenn
Co-environment officer, University of Queensland Student Union 1998

Thank you for your consistent and strong support of women's reproductive rights and congratulations on your 300th edition.

As a Timorese, I would like to congratulate 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ on its 300th issue. May another 300 issues follow in support of the rights of oppressed people, like the East Timorese, and around the world. Long live 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳! Alfonso Conte-Real
Timorese solidarity activist, Brisbane

Congratulations on 300 GLWs. You're a beacon of truth in a sea of deceit. Long may you shine.

Chris Hughes

In 1997 Australia, what people know is what Murdoch, Packer and Howard tell them. 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ is the voice of truth, dissent and decency crying out in the multi- national wilderness.

Chris Doren
The Wilderness Society, Jabiluka campaigner

When you live in a country where the main source of international news is CNN in the local bakery, it's refreshing to be able to read an alternative view of the world. Congratulations 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳.

Kim Spurway, Unexploded Ordnance Project advisor, Laos

Mainstream press only runs with the hip pocket nerve, and half-truths and very few full stories. 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ follows the workers struggle long after the head lines are gone, and the battlers are not alone when they are against the wall. With thanks.

Nigel Gould
Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union, Weipa

It's hard to believe that 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ Weekly has been publishing for seven years.

GLW has been a constant companion and resource to Alliance activists since our foundation in 1991. Articles in GLW are often discussed in our office and amongst the broader membership.

Reading GLW regenerates our activism, lifts our spirit and keeps us informed about the many other activists throughout the world who are engaging in the same fight. GLW reminds us that we are not alone but are part of a broader international movement actively challenging the capitalist system in the hope of building a world based on social justice for all.

On a personal note I also have GLW to thank for carrying the stories of our struggle in New Zealand. Your articles also motivated our national coordinator, Conor Twyford, to return to New Zealand, where she now plays a major role in our movement.

What better legacy can a newspaper have than to be an instrument which inspires and motivates readers to give their time and energy to building the progressive movement. May you continue for many, many years to come.

Matt McCarten
National chairperson and director, New Zealand Alliance

We wish to convey our congratulations to the 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ Weekly on its marvellous achievement of reaching 300 editions. In particular, we would like to pay tribute to the manner in which it has exposed the brutality and injustices of British imperialism in the occupied six counties of Ireland. Furthermore, the high standard of journalism in GLW consistently produces in highlighting the plight of oppressed people both in Australia and around the globe, is something that its staff should feel very proud of. Onwards to the next 300!

NSW branch of Australian Aid for Ireland

300 issues of 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ Weekly equate to 300 slaps in the face to the capitalist system. 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ Weekly defends the rights and interests of the working class in Australia and the principles of internationalism.

Rafael Pacheco
Australian Aid for El Salvador, Brisbane

Congratulations on the publication of the 300th issue of 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ Weekly! Not only does 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ cover the major issues of the day from labor battles, ecology, women's liberation, the struggles of oppressed peoples and youth through their refraction in the concrete situation in Australia, it is an indispensable resource for covering the world from a socialist perspective.

From the Philippines and Indonesia, to South Africa and Russia, and much more in-between, GLW offers serious information and commentary. And it does all this while breaking from the stodgy mould of most left papers with a youthful and colourful appearance. I look forward to the next 700 issues, which will bring us into the next century and your 1000th issue. Keep up the good work!

Barry Sheppard
GLW correspondent, USA

I fully support 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ Weekly. I commend the paper for its international flavour and I look forward to it for the accurate coverage of workers' struggles everywhere. Congratulations on the 300th issue.

Fred Moore
Wollongong activist and retired miner

91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ is the most outstanding left-weekly in the world. It provides timely international news coverage and analysis, highlighted by your excellent coverage of Indonesia and South Africa, and an activist perspective on Australian politics. The coverage on the fight against Australia's racist right has been especially positive, and exciting. Only mass actions can defeat rightist governments and reactionary forces.

Congratulations for the first 300 issues.

Malik Miah
Co-editor, Indonesia Alert!, San Francisco USA

If you read GLW, listen to 3CR and watch Channel 31, you're set. Wherever there's a serious issue about the rights of workers and questions of social justice and freedom, GLW is always there, very strong and very honest.

GLW has always stood very strong on the issue of the rights of Croatian people.

Happy 300th issue to 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ Weekly! 3CR Committee of Management would like to congratulate GLW on reaching 300 issues. This is an important milestone for an essential source of progressive, alternative print media in this country. At a time when alternative media is coming under increasing attack on our right and ability to present a politically independent viewpoint, we need to build strong ties of solidarity between us all.

Here's to another 300 issues, and more!

The 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ Prayer

Our paper which art 300
91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ be thy name
Thy circulation grow,
thy voice be heard
on picket line as it is on campus
Give us this week our satire and news
and forgive us our bourgeois lapses
should we stray into the valley of the sitcoms and chat shows
Lead us not into post-modernist temptation
and deliver us from Murdoch
For you are your readers, your writers, your sellers
for 300 more issues
Amen

The efficacy of prayer is vastly overrated but with the enthusiasm and dedication of all those associated with GLW, prayer fortunately shouldn't be necessary. Congratulations on a splendid achievement.

It's a Canute of a job for an individual to survive the tide of lies, bigotry and ignorance from the processed news merchants, the talkback reptiles and the braying donkeys of parliament.

GLW, with its defiant socialist framework, firm commitment to movements for progressive social change, openness to activists and encouragement of debate, can give the conservative backlash waves a run for their money.

Phil Shannon

Three hundred issues. Well done on this remarkable history of sustainable, fearless, faithful publishing. 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ is the premier paper in its class and substantially better than its competitor Brown Right. Here's to the next 300 and the next. Congratulations.

Rod Quantock

91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ has maintained the highest standards of journalistic and political integrity for the first 300 issues. It is the one paper which I keep to read for a month, or more, even when I don't have time to read it on the day of issue.

91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ can be counted on to look beyond the veneer of daily political babble and double speak. Its level of analysis surpasses all but the very best of mass media sources. Its capacity to attract writers who have not been prepared to succumb to the dictates of media barons is what has allowed it to become an authentic voice of politically alert Australians. Its coverage of the East Timorese, Indigenous and conservation issues has made it the leading alternative newspaper in Australia. Its 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ on progressive poetry, satire, book reviews and its diary of up coming political actions makes it too valuable to lose.

Dr John Tomlinson
Senior lecturer, Queensland University of Technology

Congratulations to GLW on 300 issues of uncompromisingly radical comment, well-researched reports and a strong and clear critique of existing power structures which invariably assist the rich and powerful and disadvantage workers and those who are different. GLW is an essential and important part of Australian's community media and I wish it well for the next 300 issues.

Sid Spindler
Former Australian Democrat senator, currently a spokesperson for Defenders of Native Title (Vic)

One of the things I like best about 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ is that it provides the contact details for campaigns. Too often the media creates apathy by only informing you of things after the fact. 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ wears it heart on its sleeve, which is fine by me.

Kyla Slaven
Producer of Media Magazine (national community radio media program), based at 2SER-FM, SydneyOZ

Congratulations 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ Weekly for being so committed in denouncing the situations all around the world where working class people are being attacked. Thank you for defending the forgotten people in countries such as East Timor, Burma and Indonesia against oppressive military dictatorships.

Domingos Oliveria, general secretary of UDT

It's great to get a different perspective on issues than what the pro-big business media print. Keep up the good work.

Paul Sike
NSW Electrical Trades Union delegate

Congratulations on reaching your 300th edition. Thanks for your support in covering the Hemp issue, and your solidarity in recent travails — the persecution of Queensland HEMP activists Billy Tait and Steve Dimitriou for possessing "dangerous" books. No doubt you are well aware that the rulers can find ideas "dangerous".

John Free Marijuana
Help End Marijuana Prohibition, Queensland

The Migrant Workers' Resource Centre would like to congratulate 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ Weekly on its 300th issue, and for all the support it gives by informing people of the truth from the perspectives of workers and disadvantaged groups. Thank you 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ Weekly for all your efforts.

Jorge Rodriguez
Coordinator, Migrant Workers' Resource Centre, Brisbane

Solidarity is not something you find among mainstream journalists. Chris Warren of the Media, Entertainment and Arts Alliance does not return my call when I suggest his union somehow commemorate the murder of the Balibo Five journalists, and Roger East.

A major Sydney Morning Herald journalist halves the numbers killed in East Timor to foster his contacts in the Suharto regime. A Daily Telegraph journalist phones to criticise a letter to his paper which he says is "propaganda", that asks for a judicial inquiry into the Balibo atrocity. He tells me he knew Roger East. So will he write about that? No.

Regularly East Timor is the "27th province of Indonesia", and the Falantil resistance fighters are "rebels". I could go on ... So it is great to see a paper that tells it like it is when it comes to East Timor, Indonesia and the complicity of our government in the repression there, and the cruel treatment of the 1300 East Timorese asylum seekers here.

Bravo to 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ Weekly on reaching issue 300. May you survive and thrive into the future.

Stephen Langford
Secretary, Australia East Timor Association NSW

Congratulations on reaching the 300 issue milestone. 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ has played a vital campaigning role for the past seven years. From opposition to the Gulf War, to exposing the Australian government's hand in the occupation of East Timor and defending the Indonesian pro-democracy movement, 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ Weekly has proudly defended the interests of the poor and oppressed worldwide. Let's all help 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ continue its work for another 300 issues.

Sue Bolton
Secretary of the Democratic Socialist Party, Melbourne

91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ Weekly is one of the few avenues for getting radical ideas into the public arena, and as such should be supported.

Drew Hutton
Spokesperson, Queensland Greens.

I support 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ Weekly because it keeps the best traditions of revolutionary Marxism alive in Australia.

Gary McLennan

GL has two unique things. One is that you don't see the things you read in GL anywhere else. The other thing is that activists get out and promote the paper. You see GL getting around just like the old CPA's Tribune used to.

Congratulations on 300 issues.

Daryl Smith
Waterside worker, Newcastle

All the best to the staff, readers and sellers of 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ Weekly on the important achievement of 300 issues. Seven years of hard work and determined commitment to the creation of a genuine alternative progressive newspaper has paid off with this milestone. 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ is now a must-read for the left and environmental community in Brisbane, as elsewhere in Australia and even overseas.

The members of our organisations, who have put much time and effort into the distribution of GLW, really appreciate the significance and value of the paper in building a new socialist, and environmental, alternative in this country.

Viva 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳! Onward to 600 issues and socialism!

Brisbane organiser, Democratic Socialist Party

91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ Weekly is a voice for the environment and for disadvantaged, exploited and oppressed people everywhere. I am very happy to continue to contribute photographs to GLW.

Congratulations to the 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ crew on 300 editions. From struggles over uranium in the Northern Territory to workers taking action in Melbourne, 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ consistently and reliably tells and documents progressive struggles in Australia and around the world. More power to it.

Wei Jingsheng is free at last. After nearly 18 years in prison, the prominent Chinese dissident was released on parole last week. When people around the world rejoice over this piece of great news, we would like to take this occasion to extend our gladdest congratulations to 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ Weekly, the paper that has been a long-time supporter of the democracy movement in China. We applaud your commitment to freedom of expression and your stand for fundamental human rights. As fellow activists who support the right of all people to enjoy human rights, we share your high ideals and wish your paper every success in the years to come.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the crew of GLW for their tireless support in issues relating to the Wik decision, native title and the stolen generation issue. Without your continuing support most Australians would have no idea of the real issues that concern us all and future generations. Thank you for your support and I look forward to campaigning with you all in 1998.
