Students for Refugees launched

HOBART — On May 8, students at the Hobart campus of the University of Tasmania launched a Students for Refugees group. Shua Garfield told 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ Weekly: "The formation of this group shows that you don't need a detention centre nearby to want to fight for refugee rights."

Grafton pro-refugee group

GRAFTON — This northern NSW town is the latest to establish a Rural Australians for Refugees (RAR) group after 40 people attended a meeting on May 11. An Afghan refugee, now living in Brisbane, explained the problems that refugees face. Binnie O'Dwyer from Friends of the Earth and Anne Simpson from RAR Bellingen also spoke.

'Death of democracy' rally

LISMORE — A black coffin bearing the word "democracy" and a chain-gang of suspected "terrorists" were paraded through the streets here on May 13, as part of a protest action against the federal government's proposed "anti-terrorist" laws. Passers-by were asked to fill out a "Are you a terrorist?" quiz.

The 50-strong rally, called at short notice by activists from the Rainforest Information Centre, heard law academic and long-time environmental activist Aiden Ricketts outline the undemocratic nature of the bills.
