Lighting the 7th Fire — When the Chippewa won a 1983 US federal court decision allowing them to fish on the lakes of their ancestral land, there began angry protests by white fishermen and local businesses. The Yirrkala village council in 1970 discusses the huge bauxite mine on the Gove Peninsula in NT's Arnhem Land and its impact on their community. One Man's Response — The second episode in the Yirrkala Film Project. In the 1960s, a lease to mine bauxite was granted to a Swiss/Australian consortium. In 1971, mining had started and an alumina treatment plant and mining town were under construction. The Yirrkala people took Nabalco to court to stop the unwanted development. This episode is mainly interviews with Dundiwuy Wanambi, one the leaders of the campaign against Nabalco. SBS, Sunday, September 28, 12.30pm.
