A coalition of environment groups protested聽outside the Victorian Parliament against the Labor government鈥檚 draconian anti-protest bill on June 21.

The coalition, including the聽听补苍诲听,聽called on MPs to聽withdraw the .

They held up banners reading 鈥渓ogging is criminal in a climate emergency鈥 and 鈥渓ogging fuels climate catastrophe鈥. The聽, as well as the Melbourne Climate Choir, also made an appearance.

One protester told 91自拍论坛 they opposed 鈥渦ndemocratic laws鈥 that would criminalise forest blockades and other forms of peaceful protest aimed at defending the environment.

As the Environmental Defenders Office pointed聽out, have recently enacted new anti-protest laws.

Anthony Kelly from the Melbourne Activist Legal Support聽(MALS) told聽骋尝听the bill is similar to those laws which 鈥渢arget interventionist forest blockading鈥.

鈥淭he bill increases the penalty聽for simply being in the forest聽area, in a forest coupe,鈥 he said. 鈥淚t also criminalises those with lock-on devices and things used in forest blockading.鈥

It also allows authorised officers 鈥渧ery intrusive search聽powers鈥, he said, including being able to search聽vehicles聽and people.聽

鈥淭here is a lot of concern 鈥 due to [the bill鈥檚] draconian聽nature and how it really shrinks聽the space which people have to protest forest destruction.鈥

The bill will also criminalise聽Traditional Owners from聽protecting聽Country under threat from聽logging. It includes penalties of $21,000 in fines or 12 month鈥檚 jail.

鈥淚ts targeted legislation that is aimed at criminalising disruptive聽forms of聽protest, like聽blockades,鈥 Kelly said. 鈥淎ll forms of protests get in the way; they all disrupt. Human rights courts recognise that, but governments and industry are targeting protests that are stopping injustices.鈥 It is 鈥渃ritical鈥 to resist these laws, he said.

Victorian Forest Alliance spokesperson Nic Fox said: 鈥淭he freedom to protest sits at the heart of our democracy.鈥

Extinction Rebellion spokesperson Miriam Robinson said: 鈥淰icForests is currently facing聽聽for unlawful actions in our forests. We must stop this destruction while there is still time. The forests do not belong to the government. They certainly don鈥檛 belong to VicForests. They belong to everyone, now and into the future. We have the right to protect them.鈥
