One week to go, just $9000 more to raise
Peter Boyle
In just nine weeks our supporters have donated and raised $91,033! It has been an inspiring effort.
Several hundred dollars were donated last week by US supporters in response to the letter of appeal to North American readers signed by Peter Camejo and several other veteran activists from that part of the world (see ).
A $500 donation from Judy Morley of New Lambton came in with the greeting: "More power to all at 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ Weekly, 'purveyors of fine truth'. Keep up the good work — we need you."
We are swamped with such messages of support — far too many to publish. Here are two of them:
"It is with sincere best wishes that Australians for Justice and Peace in Palestine (AJPP) is donating $200 to your emergency appeal. Having worked in Palestine as the Media Coordinator for the International Solidarity Movement, I was consistently appalled at the superficial way in which Australian journalists covered the struggle and their frank hostility to the Palestinian people.
"I am glad to note that the one shining exception to this rule has been 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ Weekly, whose honest analysis and eyewitness reports have given readers a glimpse of the awful reality of Israeli apartheid and the heroic resistance both of the Palestinians and their Israeli and international supporters.
"Keep up your great work!" — Michael Shaik, Australians for Justice and Peace in Palestine.
"91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ Weekly provides more coverage of Cuba than most international left media for which I'm particularly grateful. Even among those left media who are supportive of Cuba, interest in the pearl of the Caribbean as the island is known don't display as much consistent interest in the Cuban story as GLW.
"When the island found itself compelled to take tough and unpopular measures in self-defense two years ago, GLW didn't join those who raised a hue and cry against it. Standing up to the pressure of media-orchestrated 'popular opinion' at that moment when it was most needed provided an admirable example.
"Today our planet is threatened by a toxic mixture of ugliness, violence and the greed which underlie them. Thus, the work of the 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ Weekly, providing both a positive alternative and providing for a forum to discuss and debate controversial issues, is both sorely needed and greatly appreciated." — Walter Lippmann, moderator, CubaNews e-list ().
By the end of next week, loyal supporters of 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ Weekly will have assured that our work continues. Subscribers Neil and Irene Phillipson, from Macleay Island, Queensland, are the latest to become Friends of 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ Weekly. They explained their decision in this way: "Today's alarming news of the pending deportation of a US peace activist has pointed to the dangers facing those who speak out against the rich and the powerful, and how much we need a voice for the poor and the powerless. Long may you be that voice."
