International delegations from more than 20 different countries gathered with Honduran social movements on April 14 to demand justice for Berta Caceres, the environmentalist and indigenous activist assassinated in the Central American nation on March 3.

that more than 1300 people representing social movements and international delegations met in Tegucigalpa, Honduras, for a three-day international gathering celebrating the 鈥淟ife of Berta Caceres鈥. The renowned indigenous leader was murdered in her home last month after repeated death threats linked to her high-profile and tireless resistance and multinational interests and the Honduran regime.

鈥淭he idea of this gathering is to link up the international solidarity,鈥 said Caceres' daughter Berta Zuniga, 鈥渁nd to channel this voice, this cry for justice, to explain the assassination of my mother, companera Berta Caceres, and strengthen the organisation she belonged to.鈥

Since Caceres was assassinated, her family members and fellow activists have called for an independent, internationally-led investigation into her death. They have repeatedly slammed authorities for botching the investigation and withholding key information about the case.

International solidarity activists who have travelled to the gathering have called attention to the grave crisis lived by human rights defenders in Honduras. They stressed the need for the US and Canada to cut support to the repressive regime, both in terms of foreign aid and trade relations.
