BRISBANE — While preparations were going ahead for the official jingoistic parade to celebrate Australia Day, around 300 Murris and their supporters gathered on January 26 to mark decades of Aboriginal struggle for land and justice.

Speaking to the rally, prominent Aboriginal leader and Socialist Alliance member Sam Watson noted the key struggles of the past which had laid the groundwork for gains in the indigenous liberation movement.

"Now is the time to remember the great struggles of the past, led by our grandfathers and grandmothers, and prepare to take up the challenge to confront this racist federal government, and struggle to create our own future", Watson said.

Following a number of other Murri speakers, the crowd then marched through city streets to Jagera Hall, in Musgrave Park, for a concert.
