Below is a statement from Solidarity Committee with Iranian Workers — Australia
On December 7, while students in universities in Tehran and other cities were celebrating student day, the brutal Iranian government once again attacked students, arresting more than 40 student activists.
Other student activists started to campaign for unconditional and immediate release of all students who had been arrested and demanded the following: the right to have an independent student's association; the right to have an independent union and recognise and respect international worker's rights; removal of the military from universities; and freedom of speech and human rights for all people.
However, the military again arrested and tortured 10 more students. One student has been killed under torture and the other students in jail are in very bad psychological conditions.
During the 30 years of the current Iranian regime, progressive people and socialists have been arrested, tortured and killed. The government have tried to destroy these movements. Despite all this suppression these movements get stronger every day.
The Iranian regime is too blind to see these revolutionary movements have strong roots in the working class.
We are asking all socialist, human rights activists and progressive people to support the unconditional release of the students, and to recognise their demands.
