IRAN: Union leader jailed

September 27, 2000
Issue

The Ministry of Information and security forces of the Iranian government have summoned the president of the Saqqez bakers' union, Mahmoud Salehi, back to prison.

Last year, Salehi and four other members of the union were imprisoned for four months because of their union activities. They were released without any sentence having been passed.

On August 28 Salehi was ordered to return to prison, again without any warrant being issued.

The jailing is a clear violation of political freedom and human rights. The Worker-Communist Party of Iran has asked for protest messages to be sent to Iranian authorities and embassies.

Please send copies of any protests to (fax) 02 9630 9345, or email <asad_haidari@yahoo.com>.
