Organised by the Blak Caucus with guidance from Gadigal Elders, this protest is a space for truth-telling, resistance, mourning and solidarity. Join us to honor our survival, demand justice, and fight for the liberation of all First Nations.
January 26 marks the beginning of colonisation on our lands, leading to the violent dispossession of our ancestors and the continued oppression of our people today. The injustices we face are stark and ongoing:
Black deaths in custody remain an epidemic, with over 540 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people dying in custody since the 1991 Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody鈥攚ith zero convictions.
Our children are being forcibly removed at alarming rates. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children make up 41% of all children in out-of-home care, despite being just 6% of the total child population.
Sacred lands are being destroyed. From the blasting of Juukan Gorge by Rio Tinto to ongoing struggles to protect sites like Djab Wurrung birthing trees and the Beetaloo Basin, our connection to Country is being desecrated for profit.
We are over-policed and under-resourced. Our people are incarcerated at rates 14 times higher than non-Indigenous Australians, and systemic racism continues to deny us access to housing, healthcare, and opportunities. Our women, making up almost half of those incarcerated in NSW prisions and Closing The Gap targets are becoming more and more useless and ineffective.
This day is a call to action to reject the colonial narrative, confront the truth of this racist country, and work towards building the movement of justice and Indigenous sovereignty.
