Based on highly reliable international contacts, leaked documents and horoscopes from several TV magazines, Nostradamus' Media Watch presents a highly accurate forecast of political events across the globe. Nigeria accused of political assassinations The Nigerian military government is accused of assassinating political opponents — triggering outrage at the United Nations. Nigeria's military ruler, General Sani Abacha, accuses the member nations of hypocrisy. In a statement recorded in his private television studio and hand delivered to foreign correspondents in house arrest, he states that he is just a well-meaning head of state. He complains that if he arrests and executes opponents — he is criticised, and if he doesn't arrest them first — he is still criticised! Test bacteria escapes government isolation A deadly experimental bacteria escapes from a government isolation laboratory in Redfern and spreads havoc. The bacteria, genetically engineered, feeds on the component parts of electronics that support cable television connections. There is widespread panic throughout greater Sydney as cable TV channels disappear from anguished viewers' sets. The State Emergency Services, the combined military forces and volunteers from the Preserve the Brady Bunch on our TVs League, cordon off Sydney, preventing people from leaving. Major trading partners threaten to boycott Australia if the deadly bacteria is not contained. Paul Keating declares NSW a "state of emergency", and puts out a tender for new number plate production with that strap-line. Chirac defends French nuclear tests French President Jacques Chirac releases a statement on French MTV which states that the Australian public have not only begun to understand the importance of the French nuclear tests, but actively support them. He releases footage of a protest by several hundred people outside the French Embassy in Canberra, with a clumsy voice-over of several dozen people chanting in French in military precision: "We love you Jacques Chirac! We love the French. We love the nuclear tests!" Around the world the tape is dismissed as a fake.
