A boat carrying 21 West Papuans has sunk with one confirmed dead and 18 missing, Indonesian police said on April 20.

Police reports indicate that some of the people were student supporters of West Papuan independence, who were planning to seek asylum abroad. Two of the passengers were saved by fisher-people after the boat was struck by large waves several kilometres north of the West Papuan capital, Jayapura. Police said the survivors claimed the boat's destination was Papua New Guinea.
