WOLLONGONG — Fifty people attended a meeting organised by Broad Left titled "Organising the Working Class" on May 16. Speakers included Dick Nichols from the Democratic Socialist Party, Anna Pha from the Communist Party of Australia, John Rainsford, an independent trade union activist, and Naomi Arrowsmith from the ALP.

Discussion at the meeting took up issues such as the need for unity in the trade union movement, the importance of organising young people and women, support for the struggles for democracy in Indonesia and independence for East Timor, and the development of rank and file opposition groups in the Maritime Union of Australia and the Australian Manufacturing Workers Union.
