For nearly 10 years Peter Hicks has been entertaining Sydney audiences with his songs and music at the most eclectic mix of venues — roadsides outside factory gates at picket lines; Town Hall Square at demos supporting East Timorese, Aboriginal and green movements or protesting against the Gulf War; parks, giving support to gay rights rallies; airports, at demonstrations over the third runway; ABC Radio, performing popular parodies of politicians; Sheraton Wentworth (well, it was in the car park at a Bougainville demo!).
Peter has also been a regular at folk festivals around the country and at folk clubs and pubs in Sydney, including the Three Weeds. This location, with its great history of folk artists, is where Peter has chosen to launch his much awaited solo CD album The Bottom Line.
The catchcry of the album is "for people not for profit"; it is the culmination of years of involvement in folk and acoustic music and political activism.
For Peter, whose inspiration has been the likes of Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger and Joe Hill, there could never be any separation of the two. The album features often requested songs about East Timor, the Sydney waterfront and the extremely popular "Man with the Pink Triangle" about Kitty Fisher, a survivor of Auschwitz.
Supporting Peter at the launch will be two great new Sydney folk/acoustic acts. Creel features Kim Poole and Stephanie Osfield, who play and sing and who arranged a lot of the material on the album.
Many of us fondly remember them for their work in the glorious four piece Taliesin. Creel is an equally fantastic group.
On a completely different but extremely interesting path, Deadly are a part Aboriginal, part Indian trio who tell it like it is in the mean streets of Sydney. They feature tabla, didgeridoo and vocal harmonies in rap and song arrangements.
Other musicians to feature on the night will include John Ross on harmonica and vocals and Chris Ransom on fiddle, keyboard and vocals.
You will still see and hear Peter at demos and picket lines, but you will rarely get the chance to hear him singing and playing on such a pleasing occasion as at this album launch. Phone Peter on 9569 1127 for more details.
