QGN discusses waste dumps

BRISBANE — Plans are proceeding rapidly to implement the Rochedale super-dump, intended to dispose of this city's rubbish for a 30-year minimum period, Glenys Head of the Southside Action Group told a meeting of the Queensland Green Network here on October 20.
Despite all the evidence that the dump would be hazardous to residents' health and a threat to the environment, the Brisbane City Council and the Goss Labor government had failed to halt the project, she said.
The meeting also heard a report from Carol Penshorn from the People Against Tips group on the campaign by residents of the Pine Rivers Shire north of Brisbane against extensions to the Dakibin tip.
Local council plans for the extension violate a commitment to landholders that the tip would not become another big dump for the region.
Discussion following the reports focussed on the possibility of a further summit of community action groups and environment organisations in Brisbane to help coordinate future joint action on waste disposal and other key issues.
