A gay rights rally was held at Newcastle University on September 27 as part of gay pride week. The 40 protesters demanded an end to all laws that discriminate against queers, and equality for all regardless of sexuality.
Speakers included National Union of Students female queer officer Rachel Evans, Aids Council of NSW's Judith Butler, Karly Phillips from the Global Solidarity Network, Ben Mills from the queer collective, and Resistance activists Zane Alcorn and Hannah Gissane.
Alcorn recited poems about queer rights — "Does the very nature of a queer person's sexuality, so deeply challenge your perception of reality, that it's practically equivalent to switching off the gravity?" — and Gissane entertained the crowd with a satirical act featuring a homophobic police officer.
