The National Trust, Planning Backlash and Protectors of Public Lands Victoria joined forces to rally against the redevelopment of the historic Windsor Hotel, which is located in the parliamentary precinct.
The $260 million redevelopment involves demolishing the rear of the 1883 hotel to make way for a 91-metre, 26-storey tower. State planning minister Justin Madden approved the redevelopment on March 17 after a public scandal over a fake public consultation process by Madden's former media adviser.
The 200 protesters were just as incensed about the undemocratic planning process as they were about the redevelopment. Greens MLC Greg Barber told the rally: "To save heritage, we have to save democracy."
He added: "The Planning and Environment Act is a choice between a sham consultation or no consultation at all.
"Any planning decision can be overturned by the minister."
