School climate strikers sat down in front of the Liberal Party’s Sydney headquarters on November 29, as part of a national day of action called by School Strike 4 Climate (SS4C).
Activists expressed solidarity with communities suffering from bushfires and raised money for fire services. One woman spoke about “apocalyptic” scenes as her family home was burned down on her 18th birthday. She invited Prime Minister Scott Morrison to her community and tell them that climate change is not causing the fire storms.
Speakers called on Morrison to act on the climate emergency and provide emergency funding for fire services — not just “thoughts and prayer”.
The rally ended with activists hanging messages to Morrison outside the building. One said: “This is not a drill — Australia is on fire.”
A mass climate strike is being planned for early next year with details to be announced soon by SS4C.
