Why

A 50-year-old woman who has been renting the same worker’s cottage at 104 Golda Avenue, Salisbury for 20+ years is about to be evicted into homelessness, so we’re calling a snap anti-eviction protest to buy her some time.

Stephanie has a pet dog, pet fish and a cottage full of possessions, and has been looking for a new rental since before Christmas, but still hasn't found anywhere.

Queensland Police and Harcourts real estate have advised that they are attending to evict around 11am, on Tuesday, 6 February. We’ll be assembling a bit before that to peacefully bear witness to their attempts to evict Stephanie into homelessness, and politely encourage them to give her more time to find stable housing.

The current landlord bought the house for just $130 000 back in 2001. Since Stephanie began living there, she has paid several hundred thousand dollars in rent – far more than the house was purchased for. Stephanie has asked the real estate agency, Harcourts, to put her in direct contact with the landlord, but they have refused.

Evictions into homeless are always wrong, but this case feels particularly unfair given that Stephanie has paid far more for the house than her landlord ever did.

Stephanie is willing to relocate if she can find another home, but she needs more time to move her belongings and secure pet-friendly accommodation. She is applying for public housing, but there are currently tens of thousands of people on Queensland’s public housing waiting list.

Hopefully the landlord, real estate agency or Queensland Police will see common sense and give her a reprieve.

If you have time to respectfully contact the office of State MP Peter Russo to ask him to intervene, you can email toohey@parliament.qld.gov.au or ring 3414 3120 to ask that they support Stephanie from Golda Avenue and ensure she isn't evicted into homelessness.

See you on Tuesday! (Please bring a hat and water bottle if you can)

This action is taking place on the land of the Jagera and Turrbal peoples. We acknowledge that sovereignty was never ceded and that the eviction of low-income people into homelessness is a continuation of the same foundational logic of colonisation that has been commodifying and profiting from the theft of Aboriginal land for centuries.
