Socialist Alliance notes
Batman campaign launched
MELBOURNE - Sixty people crowded into the local Jika Jika community centre in Northcote to launch the Socialist Alliance campaign for the federal seat of Batman on October 13. The candidate in the seat will be feminist Jackie Lynch.
Diners were welcomed by Socialist Alliance Senate candidate Alison Thorne, who argued that politics needs strong, feminist candidates such as Lynch.
The dinner was addressed by a range of speakers including Pierre Morrow from Australia Asia Worker Links, Toma Hamid from the Worker Communist Party of Iraq, Jonathon Sherlock, who as the Socialist Alliance candidate in the Hoffman council by-election received 4.7% of the vote and Socialist Alliance national convenor Ricky Lane, as well as Lynch.
Socialist candidates speak at NTU
DARWIN - "We are in solidarity with those who suffered in the US on September 11 and we are in solidarity with the people of Afghanistan," activist Rick Molon told a forum at the Northern Territory University on October 17.
"We do not support terrorism but neither do we support the US continuing the cycle of violence by bombing Afghanistan."
Molon is contesting the campus elections at NTU for the Socialist Alliance, running on a platform of opposition to the war and racism, and for an activist student union.
