#StopAdani takes over Cairns

Cairns activists take the anti-coal message to the state government.

Far North Queensland Stop Adani groups mobilised when the Queensland government announced its latest "governing from the regions" exercise would be in Cairns over July 10–14.

They wanted their message that the massive Carmichael coalmine must be stopped to become the main issue and not the government’s pork-barrelling.

About 150 people rallied outside at a government function on the first night. Activists made Adani the key point at a "town hall" meeting with Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk the following night. And all through the week climate angels and Stop Adani signage were seen on street corners and tour boat wharves.

The real announcement of the week was that opposition to new coalmines is strong even in northern Queensland.
