HOBART — On April 3, the Tasmanian University Union voted down a motion from education officer Michael Harris to support the ACTU's June 28 workers' rights protests and to encourage students to participate in the demonstrations. All but three of the TUU's Student Representative Council members voted against the motion.
Resistance activist Melanie Barnes told 91×ÔÅÄÂÛ̳ Weekly that, in the face of the Howard government's attacks, solidarity between workers and students is essential and that Resistance is strongly urging the TUU to reconsider its decision. "Many students are already in the workplace and need the solidarity of their student union", she said.
