Toxic dump close to defeat

The long community campaign to stop the toxic waste dump at the abandoned Werribee quarry seems likely to succeed. A stand-off between CSR, the company that wants to establish the dump, and the local community has increased the pressure for the plan to be shelved.

In April, the Kennett government said it would bypass any attempt by the Wyndham Council to block the construction of the dump by making a "parallel" decision to approve it.

The strength of the community campaign has caused the Wyndham Council not to buckle to the state government's blackmail. The state government has not gone ahead with its threat to approve the development despite an application from CSR for it to do so.
