UNITED STATES: Hundreds of thousands protest against war

On September 24, huge crowds attended anti-war protests in a number of US cities. In Washington DC, the White House was surrounded by a sea of protesters demanding the return of US troops from Iraq. The ANSWER anti-war coalition estimated that more than 300,000 people participated.

Demonstrators were addressed by a number of prominent anti-war campaigners including Cindy Sheehan, British anti-war RESPECT MP George Galloway, Cynthia McKinney (a member of the US Congress) and Reverend Al Sharpton.

Some 50,000 protesters took to the streets in San Francisco and a similar number demonstrated in Los Angeles.
