The Onondaga Nation filed a lawsuit on March 11 claiming that it owned 8000 square kilometres of land along the New York-Pennsylvania border, including the city of Syracuse. The tribe claims that the land was illegally taken from it through a series of treaties between 1788 and 1822. The tribe's claim explains that it wants to use a positive verdict to force the cleanup of polluted sites in the area, including Onondaga lake, which is sacred land to the tribe and now one of the most polluted sites in the US. The tribe has told the media that it will not try to sue or evict any individual property owners.
