US heatwave: 'This is what global warming looks like'

Throughout June, the United States was hit by freak storms, intense heatwaves, prolonged drought, huge floods and out-of-control bushfires that have burnt out more than 2.1 million acres.

鈥淭his is what global warming looks like at the regional or personal level,鈥 . 鈥淭he extra heat increases the odds of worse heat waves, droughts, storms and wildfire. This is certainly what I and many other climate scientists have been warning about.鈥

By late June, about 72% of the US landmass was in drought or was classified as dry. : 鈥淭he ongoing heat wave is one of the most intense and widespread in U.S. history.鈥

Fellow so many temperature records were being broken that 鈥渢here is no point in listing or even attempting to summarise all of the June monthly records set in the region from Missouri to Maryland and south to Georgia during the June 28-30 period.鈥

The US鈥檚 National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) compiled the nationwide records anyway. It said on July 2 that 2440 daily heat records were broken in the previous week and 3917 in the past month. The , said Climatecentral.org.

Burt said the heatwave was 鈥渆specially extraordinary鈥 because 95% of past heat records in the area were set in the typically warmers months of July and August.

Masters said . By mid-July, weather models predict 鈥渢he potential for crazy-hot conditions capable of toppling all-time heat records in many western states鈥. Drawing on US Department of Agriculture reports, he also said 鈥渋t is likely that a multi-billion dollar drought disaster is underway in the [US] Midwest鈥.

Perhaps worst affected by the heatwave are the 1.8 million Americans that were still without power on July 3. A huge 鈥渄erecho鈥 thunderstorm pummelled parts of the US east coast on June 29, cutting power to 1 million homes from North Carolina in the south to New Jersey in the north.

ABC news said . It said 鈥渙fficials fear the death toll, already at 22, could rise because of the sweltering heat鈥.

The US鈥檚 western states are 鈥渉eaded into a hot, dry summer of potentially ferocious blazes,鈥 . A huge firestorm engulfed parts of Colorado in June, destroying about 700 homes.

The US Forest Service鈥檚 Tom Harbour told the LA Times the drought conditions meant fires were going to be 鈥渂ig鈥 this year.

鈥淲e鈥檝e had some really extraordinary runs 鈥 fires that are running 10 miles in lighter fuels. Fires that are running miles in forested areas.鈥

US agriculture department undersecretary Harris Sherman, who is in charge of the US Forest Service, told the July 2 Washington Post: 鈥淭he climate is changing, and these fires are a very strong indicator of that.鈥

Masters told Democracy Now on July 3 that . But climate change makes extreme weather more likely. He said: 鈥淭he expectation is, by the end of the century, this kind of heatwave is going to occur once every two years. So, no surprise here: a warming climate, you have a higher probability of getting hot summers like we鈥檙e seeing this year.鈥

Democracy Now host Amy Goodman asked Masters why there was no discussion of climate change among the TV meteorologists who are reporting on the heatwave. He replied: 鈥淚 think it鈥檚 important for the public to hear that what we鈥檙e seeing now is the future. We鈥檙e going to be seeing a lot more weather like this, a lot more impacts like we鈥檙e seeing from this series of heatwaves, fires and storms. And we better prepare for it.

鈥淲e better educate people what鈥檚 going on, give the best science that鈥檚 out there on what climate change is doing and where it鈥檚 likely to head. I think we鈥檙e missing a big opportunity here 鈥 or our TV meteorologists are 鈥 to educate and tell the population what is likely to happen. This is just the beginning, this kind of summer weather we鈥檙e having.鈥

Americans sweltering in the recent record-breaking heatwave may not believe it - but it seems that our ancestors suffered through much hotter summers in times gone by, several of them within the last 2,000 years.
