Brisbane's mayor has announced he will ask the police to help forcibly move on unhoused residents who are currently sleeping in public spaces such as Musgrave Park.
Homeless people will reportedly be given 24 hours' notice to leave, and non-profit groups have also received letters from the council threatening fines for placing tents in the park.
A wide range of non-profit organisations have said that stable alternative housing options have not been offered to people sleeping in tents, which means that if the council moves people on, they'll have nowhere safe to go.
Rough sleepers with complex needs require a range of different support services and responses, but sending in the police to forcibly evict people definitely won't help.
Join us in Musgrave Park on Sunday evening from 3:30pm to 5ish to show your opposition to the mayor's announcement, and share ideas about how we can respond.
We'll also be hearing from frontline organisations that have been working with people on the ground, as well as from Action Ready, who'll be sharing insights on how to safely monitor police actions and show solidarity to resist move-ons.
(Obviously this action is being organised at short notice, so more details are yet to be confirmed. Email office@jonathansri.com if your group would like to be involved.) This action is taking place on the unceded lands of the Jagera and Turrbal peoples.
