The defiant declaration of the French government, headed by Jacques Chirac, to renew underground nuclear tests in the Moruroa Atoll is an open challenge to peace and public opinion for nuclear disarmament.
The previous French government had imposed a moratorium on nuclear tests. The new French government has given a go-ahead and defied the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), which calls for exercising the utmost restraint on nuclear tests.
The NPT has legalised the possession of nuclear weapons by the five nuclear powers and prevented its spread beyond the five. But these powers instead of moving towards total elimination of these weapons, still want to retain them in smaller numbers but in more developed and precise forms. Thus the danger for humankind persists. A total and unconditional elimination of these weapons is the only way to avert that catastrophe.
We urge all people of good will and youth in particular to perceive the danger and strongly protest in different ways to stop the French decision on nuclear testing in the South Pacific.
