Protest against Irish braodcaster RTE call for a boycott of the Eurovision contest, in Dublin on March 9.

An Israeli government-backed propaganda initiative is attempting to rig another online poll about whether there should be a boycott of the听听in Tel Aviv later this month.

This desperate effort to manipulate public opinion comes as Israeli organisers are struggling to unload thousands of unsold tickets to the event.

The Irish publication thejournal.ie听听asking readers whether they support the boycott.

On April 30, the results of the poll were at 56% in support of the boycott and 38% in opposition.

The astroturfing campaign on the听听was launched sometime between April 30 and May 1, according to researcher听, who runs the Twitter account听听to track and expose the app鈥檚 activities.

During that time, the results of the poll dramatically changed direction.

At the time of writing, the poll showed 39% in support of the boycott and 57% opposed to it.

The app is also trying to manipulate the results of another Twitter poll, as highlighted by听.

This is听听the Israeli app has manipulated a poll by thejournal.ie.

Astroturfing

Last year, the app鈥檚 operators听听for successfully rigging a similar poll asking whether Ireland鈥檚 national broadcaster RTE should respect a Eurovision boycott.

This听听about whether Israel could have used similar methods to secure its victory in the 2018 Eurovision contest, which is decided in large part by telephone and SMS voting by television viewers.

Act.IL is an听听that directs users to take actions online that make it appear Israel has much more grassroots support than it actually does.

This tactic is known as听.

The app has also been directing users to sign petitions and make pro-Israel comments on Eurovision-related posts.

The app鈥檚 focus on Ireland is not surprising given that there has been a strong campaign there in support of a boycott.

Almost 6000 people have signed a petition calling on Irish entrant Sarah McTernan to withdraw from the contest.

The Eurovision contest needs all the support it can get, given 鈥渢hat the expected wave of tourists has failed to materialise,鈥澨齮o a report by Israeli business publication听Globes.

As a result, thousands of Eurovision tickets remain unsold, and Tel Aviv hotel and flight prices are plummeting.

鈥淭he situation in Israel is not normal,鈥 William Lee Adams, a Eurovision blogger and enthusiast,听听The Jerusalem Post.

鈥淚鈥檝e never seen a situation where there are so many unsold seats this close to the show.

鈥淭ickets to the live shows typically sell out immediately after each wave of tickets is released,鈥 Adams observed.

, the Israeli public broadcaster that is producing the event in Tel Aviv, was forced by the Israeli government to take out a loan to cover the expenses of the concert.

This resulted in very high ticket prices that 鈥渆ven Israelis on Israeli salaries aren鈥檛 willing to pay,鈥 according to Adams.

Sharon Ben-David, Kan鈥檚 Eurovision spokesperson, said the broadcaster was 鈥渘ot worried,鈥 adding that 鈥減eople will buy tickets.鈥

The Tel Aviv municipality is subsidizing certain costs in an attempt to attract more tourists, 鈥渂ut it seems that these moves might be too late to counter the city鈥檚 reputation,鈥澨The Jerusalem Post听reported.

Tel Aviv is seen as a high-cost destination for tourists.

Celebrating ethnic cleansing

Israel sees hosting Eurovision as a major international propaganda opportunity, treating it as a 鈥溾 with full government support and听听of state financing.

Eurovision is set to begin on May 14, Israel鈥檚 so-called Independence Day.

On the same day, Israel is planning to name a train station in occupied East Jerusalem after US President听听for听听the US embassy to Jerusalem last year, Israeli transport minister听 announced on Twitter.

On May 14 last year, the day the US embassy opened, Israeli occupation forces听听in Gaza and injured thousands, as tens of thousands protested along the eastern perimeter of the besieged territory.

Held on the eve of听 鈥 when Palestinians commemorate the ethnic cleansing of their homeland to make room for Israel in May 1948 鈥 the demonstrations were among the biggest ever in the territory.

The May 14 killings remain the largest single-day massacre Israel has committed in the Gaza Strip during protests held under the banner of the听.

Crossing the picket line

Dozens of international cultural figures and business people signed a听听opposing the Palestinian call to boycott the contest.

The letter was organised by听, a听听for the far-right Israel lobby organization听.

The effort apparently听听Weber Shandwick, a major global public relations firm.

The letter states that 鈥渢he spirit of togetherness is under attack by those calling to boycott Eurovision,鈥 adding that the cultural boycott campaign is 鈥渟ubverting the spirit of the contest and turning it from a tool of unity into a weapon of division.鈥

The signatories calling on people to undermine and cross the Palestinian picket line include Serbian performance artist Marina Abramovi膰, British comedian Stephen Fry and British reality TV personality Sharon Osbourne.

The letter does not mention that Palestinians from the occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip, and Palestinian refugees forcibly exiled outside their homeland, cannot attend the song contest due to Israel鈥檚 discriminatory restrictions.

In spite of these facts, the letter claims falsely that Eurovision 鈥渆mbodies this unifying power鈥 to 鈥渉elp bridge our cultural divides and bring people of all backgrounds together.鈥

More than 100 Palestinian artists signed a听听in March calling on contestants to boycott Eurovision and 鈥渁void participating in Israel鈥檚 explicit agenda of using international artists鈥 appearances to whitewash its crimes against humanity.鈥

鈥淛ust along the coast from Tel Aviv is the besieged Gaza Strip, where Israel has caged two million of us,鈥 the letter states.

More than two dozen Israeli artists听听a similar letter last month, and听听have made the same call.

Calls to withdraw

Earlier this year, British personalities signed a听听urging the BBC to cancel its coverage of the event, citing Israel鈥檚 human rights abuses.

Meanwhile, Palestinians are听听on Iceland鈥檚 Eurovision contestant听听to withdraw from the contest, in particular for being 鈥渙n the record supporting Palestinian rights.鈥

鈥淎rtists who insist on crossing the Palestinian boycott picket line, playing Tel Aviv in defiance of our calls, cannot offset the harm they do to our human rights struggle by 鈥榖alancing鈥 their complicit act with some project with Palestinians,鈥 the Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel, told the group.

鈥淭he most meaningful expression of solidarity is to cancel performances in apartheid Israel.鈥

Israel was contemplating听听the Icelandic band for its plan to protest Israel鈥檚 abuses during the contest, as well as its support for the boycott, divestment and sanctions movement for Palestinian rights.

Hatari was threatened with legal action by听, an Israeli group听听to the Mossad spying and assassination agency.

Meanwhile,听听is facing a backlash for her planned appearance at Eurovision in Tel Aviv.

The pop star鈥檚 performance of two songs is set听, to be paid for by Canadian-Israeli real estate tycoon and 鈥渟elf-appointed ambassador-at-large for Israel鈥澨.

Former Israeli soldier Gal Gadot, who听听in the blockbuster movie听Wonder Woman, is also set to听听during the contest鈥檚 finale.

Eurovision鈥檚 Israeli producers are also听听American actor Will Ferrell to appear on stage.
