The No New Gas Coalition protested on June 17 in response to the Northern Territory Labor government鈥檚 decision to frack the Beetaloo Basin and set up a new gas hub at Middle Arm. They spelled out 鈥淣o New Gas鈥 and performed.

Federal Labor combined with the Liberals to stop the Senate from setting up an inquiry into the Middle Arm precinct on Darwin Harbour. Climate activists believe it is being set up as a gas export hub.

Gas corporation Tamboran Resources announced in early June it had plans to build a聽liquefied natural gas plant (LNG) at Middle Arm to export fracked gas from the Beetaloo Basin.

It is one of five companies the NT government has provided commitments to for land at Middle Arm. Tamboran announced the export facility would have an initial capacity of 6.6 million tonnes of LNG per year, with the potential for expansion.

Climate Action Darwin criticised Labor and the Coalition for frustrating the Senate鈥檚 constitutional role as a house of review.

Labor wants to avoid parliamentary scrutiny, it said, because of the public backlash about it knowingly promising at least $1.5 billion to support the gas industry.
