The Australian Religious Response to Climate Change organised a multi-faith vigil for climate justice on December 8.

Attendees marched from St Brigid鈥檚 Catholic Church聽to Prime Minister Anthony Albanese鈥檚 electorate office in Marrickville.

Father Kevin Dance outlined the pope鈥檚 message on the need to act urgently in the 鈥淣o faith in fossil fuels鈥 protest. He said mining of coal and gas must end.

A Buddhist meditation for peace and climate action followed. Several Christmas carols, with adapted words, were sung: 鈥淲e鈥檒l stop mining coal鈥 was sung to the tune of 鈥淲e will overcome鈥, and 鈥淟et鈥檚 not sell gas! Let鈥檚 not sell coal!鈥 to the tune of 鈥淛oy to the world鈥.

A prayer aimed at COP28 leaders included that Labor 鈥渃ommits to phasing out the export of coal and gas and, at the same time, makes and executes specific plans for an equitable, orderly transition to a sustainable economy, one which is powered by renewable energy鈥.

A Christmas card, signed by those present, was delivered to Albanese鈥檚 staff.
