"Northern Syria鈥檚 Feminist Revolution" is the title of a one-day seminar to be held at Victoria University on November 4.

It is being jointly organised by the Kurdish Democratic Community Centre of Victoria, the Kurdish Women鈥檚 League of Victoria and the Australians for Kurdistan solidarity group. It is also sponsored by Victoria University鈥檚 Community, Identity and Displacement Research Network.

Chilean hip-hop artist Ana Tijoux has penned a forceful call to re-empower the concept of feminism. In it, she calls for 鈥渁nother feminism鈥 that is at the same time anti-patriarchal, anti-capitalist and anti-fascist.

On March 8, women around the world gave themselves a day off 鈥 from the system.

The Brazilian football team El Cruzeiro wore T-shirts highlighting the many issues that women in the South American country still face on a daily basis. Meanwhile, a similar initiative was announced by the Costa Rican football league. On March 8, players did not celebrate goals scored as part of a campaign meant to express solidarity with women victims of violence.

鈥淚鈥檇 like to call bullshit.鈥 So declared Melissa Barbieri, a former captain of Australian women鈥檚 football (soccer) team the Matildas, on the symbolic support for women鈥檚 rights offered by sporting clubs and bodies on International Women鈥檚 Day.

There鈥檚 a new bogey man on the block.

It is credited with the rise of brazenly crude figures such as Donald Trump and Pauline Hanson. It is behind outrageous-sounding propositions like Safe Schools, anti-discrimination laws and gender equality. It is running around Melbourne, putting a tiny skirt on the little figure on traffic lights.

In this increasingly polarised political climate, political correctness has emerged as the new villain.

Feminist author and career academic Germaine Greer has sparked outrage once again following a controversial interview she gave to the BBC on October 24 where she reaffirmed her position that transgender women are not 鈥渞eal鈥 women. Greer's devolution from an ideological pillar of the 1960's women's liberation movement to a source of loathing for 91自拍论坛 of the feminist community needs to be discussed. Her comments provide an important opportunity for putting forward a clear argument against trans-exclusionary feminism.

Margarita Windisch presented this talk at the 鈥淔ighting Misogyny and Sexism Today鈥 seminar, hosted by Socialist Alliance and Resistance, in Sydney on August 8. Margarita is a sexual assault worker, a lecturer and a member of the Socialist Alliance.

A new group has been established to campaign for women鈥檚 rights in Indonesia. In December, more than 100 women met in Jakarta to launch Indonesian Women鈥檚 Action 鈥 Kartini (API-K), which has begun campaigning for women鈥檚 rights in the workplace, home and society. Participants came from 32 cities across Indonesia. They included women who are involved in existing women鈥檚 networks, students, workers and urban poor. They spent three days discussing issues facing women in economics, politics and culture.
