Nowhere in the world do women have the same rights and opportunities as men. Internationally, women are becoming poorer and ever more oppressed, writes Kathy Fairfax.
Of all the International Women鈥檚 Day (IWD) demonstrations held in an unprecedented 177 countries on March 8, the Spanish state stood out as the site of the largest mobilisation for women鈥檚 equality. In fact, it was the greatest mobilisation for women鈥檚 right in history, with almost 6 million people 鈥 overwhelmingly women 鈥 striking and demonstrating in about 120 cities and towns.
About five million women went on strike聽and marched in Spain on March 8 in support of a call for an international women鈥檚 strike to mark聽International Women鈥檚 Day and demand a just and egalitarian society, that day.
If we are serious about using International Women鈥檚 Day, held annually on March 8, to campaign for the freedom and equality of women and girls, then we should not ignore Palestinians.
On March 8, women around the world gave themselves a day off 鈥 from the system.
The Brazilian football team El Cruzeiro wore T-shirts highlighting the many issues that women in the South American country still face on a daily basis. Meanwhile, a similar initiative was announced by the Costa Rican football league. On March 8, players did not celebrate goals scored as part of a campaign meant to express solidarity with women victims of violence.
Women were聽for their rights across the United States and聽聽on March 8 in honor of International Women's Day.
International Women鈥檚 Day (IWD) in Australia has lost its radical edge. In recent years, it has become more about holding cosy breakfasts and receptions where female bureaucrats and businesswomen can rub shoulders with political leaders and congratulate themselves on their 鈥渟uccess鈥.
These events can make us forget that IWD has a radical socialist history of women determinedly marching for their rights. And once it even helped spark a revolution.
