Acland Coal Stage 3 extension rejected

Members of the Oakey Coal Action Alliance (OCAA) gathered in Acland on February 14 for the Queensland environment department鈥檚 decision on the environmental authority for New Hope Coal鈥檚 proposed Acland Stage 3 project.聽

Expecting the worst 鈥 that the department would reject the recommendation of the Land Court 鈥 local farmers and community members were overjoyed at the decision by Queensland鈥檚 Environment and Science Department to reject New Acland鈥檚 environmental authority amendment for the Stage 3 coalmine expansion.聽

Land Court approves Kevin鈥檚 Corner coalmine

The Queensland Land Court delivered its judgement on Hancock Galilee鈥檚 proposed Kevin鈥檚 Corner coalmine on July 4. Hancock Galilee is a wholly owned subsidiary of the GVK Group, which also owns the adjacent Alpha mine.

Land court member Wayne Cochrane determined: 鈥淭here is no basis upon which I should recommend refusal of the grant of the mining lease, notwithstanding that it will convert otherwise useful grazing land into a coalmine.鈥

Acland Stage 3 rejection a victory for people power

Local farmers and community members joined representatives of the Oakey Coal Action Alliance and their legal team from the Environment Defenders Office (EDO) outside the Queensland Land Court on May 31.

They were celebrating a resounding victory in their case against the expansion of the New Acland coalmine in the rich farmlands of the Darling Downs.

Adani mega coalmine gains more approval

On December 15, the Queensland Land Court recommended the giant Adani-Carmichael open-cut coalmine be given the go-ahead in central Queensland subject to several conditions including the protection of the endangered Black Throated Finch. The hearing was prompted by a number of objections to the mine, including from the conservation group Land Services of Coast and Country.

Community takes on New Hope Coal in Land Court

The Queensland Land Court has begun hearing objections to the expansion of New Hope Coal's Acland Stage 3 coalmine in the Darling Downs, one of Australia's richest agricultural and pastoral regions. There are 27 objectors to the mining lease applications and 35 objectors to the draft Environmental Authority. The objectors include Oakey Coal Action Alliance, Darling Downs Environment Council, Clean Air Queensland and many local farmers concerned about the impact the coalmine expansion will have on the sustainability of their operations.
