Organised by the Anticolonial Asian Alliance, the action came after students in Surabaya (East Java) were raided by military personnel and were called monkeys in a tirade of racial abuse. The protest called for an end to the media blackout imposed by the Indonesian government, which human rights groups have deemed a breach of safety, and to support independence and freedom for West Papua and for Australian governent to end its trainig and assistance to the Indonesian military. West Papua solidarity actions were held in Darwin, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth over the following week.
