Iranian women have been protesting against the compulsory wearing of the hijab since the 1979 revolution.

The following statement by a group of international socialist feminists in solidarity with Iranian women鈥檚 struggles was initiated by the on February 10.

The Socialist Alliance in Australia is among the signatories.

As socialist feminists,聽we support聽the courageous Iranian women who have been taking off their headscarves in public to express their opposition to the compulsory hijab in Iran.聽

Since聽December 27, dozens of women have taken off their scarves in public places. They have faced arrest, with some temporarily released after posting heavy bail.聽

These brave women who believe that wearing the hijab should be a matter of individual choice without any imposition from above,聽reflect the wishes of a majority of the Iranian public聽according to the Iranian regime鈥檚 own polls.

In fact, since December 28, a wave of popular protests and strikes has been spreading throughout Iran in opposition to the Islamic Republic.聽These protests have included broad sectors of the Iranian working class,聽women and men, mostly young.

They have聽been preceded by and continue to involve employed and unemployed workers,聽students, teachers, healthcare workers, retirees,聽the dispossessed and the families of political prisoners.聽

They also include members of various oppressed national minorities such as Arabs, Kurds and Azaris as well as persecuted religious minorities such as Baha鈥檌s.聽

The latest expressions of opposition to the compulsory hijab by individual women are not only part of this new wave of popular protest, but聽also part of a four-decade long resistance by Iranian women against the Islamic Republic,聽and聽for civil rights and聽human rights.聽

Despite severe repression,聽Iranian feminists have expressed themselves聽through novels, blogs, websites, group discussions and聽translations of works by international feminists.聽

Some socialists,聽inside and outside Iran,聽have belittled the聽protests against the compulsory hijab as 鈥渓iberal feminism鈥 and 鈥渘ot radical enough鈥.聽In the words of a seasoned socialist feminist inside Iran however:聽鈥淭oday,聽Iranian women need freedom from headscarves, full veils or any cover.聽They need the civil rights that they have been denied.聽

鈥淥nce the expansion of the demonstrations leads to the realisation of these freedoms鈥β犅爐he struggle can go beyond them and become the beginning of聽women鈥檚 struggle against the reification of social relations.鈥

Almost 40 years ago,聽tens of thousands of聽Iranian women marched and protested聽for five days from聽March 8 to March 12 in 1979, to commemorate International Women鈥檚 Day and聽to say no to Ayatollah Khomeini鈥檚 order to make the hijab compulsory and聽abolish the limited rights which the family protection law under the previous regime gave them.聽

Those brave Iranian women who had participated in the revolution against the repressive regime of the Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi,聽chanted:聽鈥淲e didn鈥檛 make a revolution to go backward.鈥

At that time, some Iranian socialist men supported the women鈥檚 protests.聽However, most聽Iranian socialists and socialist organizations opposed the protests and called on women to stop their marches and sit-ins because they were 鈥渄iverting鈥 the struggle from the main goal of opposition to US imperialism and the monarchy.聽

International leftist feminist Kate Millett, and聽socialist and Marxist feminists like Claudine Moullard, Leila Sebbatt, Simone De Beauvoir, Raya Dunayevskaya,聽however, reached out to Iranian women with statements of support, articles and even fact-finding trips to Iran to meet and march with Iranian women.聽聽

They recognised the importance of women鈥檚 protests against the compulsory hijab聽and the women鈥檚 liberation struggle in general as an effort to deepen the revolution and challenge Khomeini鈥檚 drive to impose a counter-revolution.聽聽

Today, we the signatories of this statement,聽refuse to separate our opposition to US imperialism and any imperialist war drive on Iran,聽from our support for the progressive and revolutionary聽social justice struggles of Iranian women, workers and oppressed minorities against their regime.聽聽聽

We too are suffering from rising authoritarianism,聽right-wing populism, and neo-fascism in the US, Europe, Russia, China,聽South Asia, Africa,聽Latin America and Australia, as well as whole of the Middle East.

In the West,聽hard fought women鈥檚 rights聽in what have been聽known as 鈥渓iberal democracies鈥澛燼re under severe attack.聽At the same time,聽the new Me Too movement against sexual harassment and sexual assault is growing, and targeting聽the abuse of women in all spheres whether government,聽academia or the arts,聽corporations or factories,聽service sector jobs or the family.聽

African American women who have always experienced the triple oppression of racism, sexism and capitalism continue to represent the most radical dimension of women鈥檚 struggles.聽

Given the global nature of the assault on women,聽it is extremely important for women who oppose capitalist imperialist patriarchy, misogyny, racism and homophobia to come together and link our struggles. We must seek聽to find a聽new direction forward聽and develop聽an alternative聽humanist way of producing, living, organising聽and relating to our fellow human beings and to nature.聽聽聽

Toward this aim, we salute our Iranian sisters and reach out to them in solidarity.聽We call on others who agree with this statement to join us in this effort.聽
