The Sydney Knitting Nannas Against Gas and supporters protested outside a Tamboran Resources meeting on August 21, calling for an end to plans to frack the Beetaloo Basin in the Northern Territory.

The Nannas handed out flyers to those entering the building, while others held placards and sang protest songs.

鈥淲e stand in solidarity with the Traditional Owners of the Yanyuwa, Garrwa, Alawa, Mudburra, Gudanji, Mara and Jingili Nations鈥 who have opposed fracking for gas on their lands for more than a decade.

They pointed to the risks from hundreds of gas wells across the Beetaloo Basin, endangering aquifers, to reach the shale.

鈥淲e don鈥檛 have to do this. There are alternatives without the massive risk of shale gas fracking but the gas industry is fighting for profits and 20 more years of fossil fuel mining.鈥

The Nannas believe that the recently introduced water trigger into environmental laws means that 鈥渇racking should not proceed without this protection being available鈥.

鈥淭raditional Owners also need the protection of the promised national cultural heritage legislation, which has yet to be drafted.鈥
