During聽1990s, the Chicago Bulls dominated聽basketball in the Unied States, winning 6 National Basketball Association (NBA)聽championships聽with聽Michael聽Jordan at the centre of the聽team.听Directed by聽Jason聽Hahir,聽the ESPN documentary聽The Last Dance聽gives us a nostalgic look at聽the聽rise of that dynasty.听
The story centres on Jordan, who became a聽superstar whose fame transcended the world of聽basketball to become聽a global聽icon.听The聽Last Dance聽traces the rise of Jordan, as he moves from聽college athlete to being聽the Bulls first pick in the 1984 NBA draft.听
Other key members of the Bulls聽organisation such as Scottie Pippen, Dennis Rodman, Tony聽Kukoc聽and coach Phil聽Jackson聽are also interviewed, providing a glimpse into聽the key moments of the Bulls dynasty. It also features footage of Jordan鈥檚 exploits with the 1992 US "Dream Team" at the Barcelona Olympics.听
The Last Dance聽has some聽major flaws. For a documentary that聽claims to be a 鈥渨arts and all" story,聽there is a serious conflict of interest in the fact that ESPN聽failed to disclose the involvement of Jordan鈥檚 production company聽Jump 23. This聽means聽Jordan effectively had a veto over聽the final cut.听
A notable critic, renowned documentary film-maker Ken Burns聽said:聽鈥淚f you are there, influencing the聽very fact of it getting made聽it means that certain aspects聽you don鈥檛 necessarily want in,聽aren鈥檛 going聽to be in there,聽period. And聽that is not聽the way you do good journalism.鈥澛Last Dance聽doesn鈥檛 necessarily avoid the聽controversial moments in Jordan鈥檚 career, but it also聽depicts them聽how Jordan wants you聽to see them.听
Jordan鈥檚 ruthless competitive streak聽shows聽as聽he bullies聽and belittles聽teammates, treating everyone around him poorly.听Sportswriter Dave聽Zirin聽criticised the lionisation of Jordan's bullying聽in an April 22 article in , stating 鈥渨hile exposing聽a new generation聽to聽Jordan's聽greatness, the聽filmmaker also projects this bullying as聽critical to his success. Former presidents and Hall of聽Famers, in tiresome fashion,聽pay tribute to his 'intensity' without a thought聽to it鈥檚 toxicity.鈥澛
One key target聽of Jordan鈥檚 behaviour is Bulls' general manager聽Jerry Krause, who The Last Dance聽vilifies. It portrays聽him as a petty schemer who was solely to blame聽for the dismantling of the Bulls dynasty聽post 1998. While not entirely blameless, this scapegoating is聽unfair, especially as it fails to mention that Krause had died in 2017聽and there is no one聽in The Last Dance聽to tell his side of the story.听
Jordan's career also stands in stark contrast to iconic activist athletes from Muhammad Ali聽to Colin聽Kaepernick,聽whose聽commitment聽to using their platform for social change came at great personal cost. Jordan, however, has been dedicated聽solely to pursuit of his corporate bottom line,聽refusing to聽speak up for any cause that may threaten that bottom line. Jordan refused to act on allegations of labour abuses in Nike sweatshops and refused聽to聽publicly oppose segrationist聽bigot Senator Jesse Helms, allegedly stating: "Republicans buy sneakers too".听
When confronted with this alleged quote, Jordan doesn鈥檛 deny it. Instead, he justifies his actions聽by saying: 鈥淭he way I go out of my life,聽I set聽examples. If聽it inspires you, great, if聽it doesn鈥檛, then maybe I'm not the person you should be following.鈥澛
A counter example of an activist-athlete is Jordan's Bulls'聽teammate聽Craig Hodges, a聽crucial part of the first two Bulls championships who believed that athletes should use聽their platform to advocate for social change. Hodges聽wrote an eight-page letter聽to then US president George HW Bush to protest聽racism聽in the US and the 1991 Gulf war.听
It is actions such as these that led to Hodges聽being run out of the NBA in 1992, a fate shared by NFL star Colin聽Kaepernick聽more recently over his refusal to stand for the US national anthem in protest against racism. The Last Dance聽attempts to erase Hodge鈥檚聽legacy, with the player a notable absence聽from the series.听However, Hodges has refused to be silent, continuing his activism and speaking out in countless interviews about his time with the Bulls.听
The Last Dance聽is great viewing, especially if you grew up聽in the 90s and聽want a bit of nostalgia聽for the champion聽Bulls' teams.听But the documentary remains essentially聽corporate brand management for Jordan and the NBA. We聽can聽admire Jordan's skill, but we should look at The聽Last Dance聽with more critical聽eyes.听
As Zirin聽noted: 鈥淛ordan is effectively聽using this documentary to tell a new generation聽that you don鈥檛 have to care about anything if it gets in聽the way of the ultimate, to be number 1.听To hell with the person聽to your left or right."聽
Especially聽now,聽in times of the Covid-19聽virus, this ethos needs to be rejected in favour of one of聽solidarity and compassion. So聽it is best to not 鈥渂e like Mike.鈥澛
