Defence minister Richard Marles has聽聽for instructing one of its fighter jets to release flares at a Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft in the South China Sea on February 11.

Defence states that聽it was 鈥渦nsafe鈥 and 鈥渦nprofessional鈥.

But they failed to mention where the incident took place.

The Chinese ministry said it was near the聽Paracel Islands in the South China Sea 鈥 a disputed聽archipelago聽under Chinese administration聽since 1974, to which聽Vietnam and聽Taiwan also claim sovereignty.

罢丑别听Paracel Islands聽include about 130 small聽coral islands聽and聽reefs,聽220 nautical miles (350聽kilometres) south-east of聽聽and about the same distance from聽Vietnam.

Under international law,聽聽(EEZ)聽grant exclusive rights to marine resources up to 200 nautical miles from a country鈥檚 coastline.聽EEZs do not prohibit vehicle transit.聽

According to聽聽Douglas Guilfoyle 鈥渢his is not a zone in which there is any express right to protect national security or prohibit foreign military exercises鈥.

Beijing claims that Australian military patrols of the South China Sea聽have been 鈥渧iolating Chinese sovereignty and endangering Chinese national security鈥. The exact location of聽the RAAF aircraft is unknown, but it was in the South China Sea.

The Australian Defence Force鈥檚 (ADF) 鈥淥peration Gateway鈥 has, for decades, sent warships and planes to the South China Sea to undertake 鈥渟urveillance鈥.

Since the incident, the corporate media have sounded the alarm at聽聽travelling through Southeast Asia to聽Australia鈥檚 north-east聽on February 13.

By February 20, the frigates were reported sailing聽150 nautical miles (240 kilometres) from the coast of Sydney聽鈥 within Australia鈥檚 EEZ but still in international waters.

On February 22鈥23, China conducted live fire exercises in international waters outside Australia鈥檚 EEZ.

奥丑颈濒别听聽these exercise were 鈥渋n accordance with international law鈥, he is hypocritically whipping up fears about the Chinese ships鈥 presence in the region.聽Shadow defence minister Andrew Hastie called the exercises 鈥減rovocative鈥.

In the lead-up to a federal election, in which the AUKUS military alliance will be under scrutiny, Marles believes he has everything to gain from beating the drums of war.

鈥淎UKUS is fundamentally a good deal for the United States, as of course it is for Australia,鈥 he said on February 20.

鈥淎UKUS is a really important arrangement between Australia, the United States and the United Kingdom,鈥 he gushed to the media. 鈥淲hen I had the opportunity to meet with Secretary Hegseth a week or so ago, it was incredibly warm but supportive about what we鈥檙e trying to achieve, what both our countries are trying to achieve with AUKUS.鈥

But with Donald Trump back in charge of United States foreign policy, Marles may have overreached.

罢丑别听聽affirmed last year that nearly聽聽have misgivings about the Australia-US alliance drawing it into a war in Asia 鈥渢hat would not be in Australia鈥檚 interests鈥.

Some 57% rate the potential of a military conflict in the South China Sea as a 鈥渃ritical threat鈥 and are concerned it could聽聽against China.

础听聽found that almost half of those polled last November said AUKUS must be reviewed.

Asked if Australia should 鈥渞eview its commitment to the聽AUKUS defence agreement, including the purchase of nuclear-powered submarines鈥, 21% said they 鈥渟trongly agreed鈥 and another 27% said they 鈥渟omewhat agreed鈥.

Meanwhile, anti-war activists joined an international day of protest against military bases on February 23, called by聽.

The Sydney Anti-AUKUS Coalition went to Garden Island on February 22, next to HMAS Kuttabul, to protest the AUKUS military pact and demand Labor distance itself from the US.

Activists spoke about the danger of becoming a military target, the waste of money when so many societal essentials are underfunded and the environmental destruction inherent in building bases 鈥 for which the only purpose is more war.

This makes it even more important to rip up AUKUS and work on being a good neighbour in the Asia-Pacific.
