About 2000 people, mostly women and union members marked聽International Women鈥檚 Day on March 6, with a lively rally and march.
Chants of 鈥淲omen united will never be defeated鈥, 鈥淭ell me what a feminist looks like? This is what a feminist looks like鈥 and 鈥淲hen women's rights are under attack, what do we do? Stand up! Fight back!鈥 rang through the streets.
Speakers addressed the inequality women still face at work and in society, the leading roles women play in many struggles for justice, including for First Nations rights, against the Junta in Myanmar, against Israel鈥檚 genocide in Palestine, and against oppressive regimes like that in Iran.
When Michelle O鈥橬eill, president of the Australian Council of Trade Unions (ACTU) spoke, a few women chanted 鈥淐FMEU鈥 to demonstrate their displeasure at the ACTU鈥檚 complicity in attacks against that union.
The rally marched to Parliament House.
