Ìý²¹²Ô»åÌý organised a rally for public housing on May 19 to protest the New South Wales government’s plans to evict more than 100 people from the Franklyn-Bay streets complex, demolish buildings and sell the land to private developers to build 14-storey high complexes in Glebe.
Speakers called for a massive investment into public housing to ensure everyone has a safe and secure home.Â
More than 50,000 people are on a wait list for public housing, but there are likely many more who could be eligible.
A report by Community Housing Industry Association NSW found that households could be waiting for up to 10 years. The government has reportedly sold off during the last decade, amounting to 4205 social housing properties across NSW.
