A group of alumni and friends attended the University of Queensland (UQ) Senate meeting on April 18, to challenge the university鈥檚 involvement with the weapons corporation, Boeing.
Ten people聽entered and addressed the Senate 鈥 a key decision-making council of the university 鈥 holding a banner which read: 鈥淏oeing Arms Genocide鈥.
Spokesperson Margaret Pestorius said the interruption at its bimonthly meeting聽was to 鈥渞emind鈥 the UQ Senate that Boeing was one of several weapons corporations receiving $30 billion each year from the federal government for new military projects in a time of peace.
The visitors made a series of speeches exploring the impacts of Boeing鈥檚 destructive endeavours.
Pestorius said the Senate needed to 鈥渇ace up to鈥 allowing a weapons company 鈥渞ight into the heart of young people鈥檚 education鈥. She also criticised the attempt to normalise the 鈥渕ilitarisation of education and our society鈥.
Boeing is the world鈥檚 third largest weapons corporation: it is running a hypersonic missile program at the Boeing Institute on the St Lucia campus.
鈥淏oeing鈥檚 commercial operations are about killing people,鈥 Pestorius said. 鈥淏oeing weapons kill ordinary people in Yemen and Palestine and our own neighbours in West Papua.鈥
Pestorius said the group will continue to campaign against Boeing until it is recognised as the 鈥淎dani鈥 of the corporate weapons industry.
