July 19Ìýwill markÌý7Ìýyears of detention for those refugees who were sent to detention centres onÌýManusÌýIsland and Nauru. At the time,Ìýformer prime minister Kevin Rudd announced people arriving by boat to seek asylum would be processed offshore andÌýneverÌýbe allowed toÌýresettle in Australia.
Despite the harm and trauma caused byÌýthis policy, the Scott Morrison government has no plan to endÌýdetention. Instead, it is focused on getting powers to seize the phones from people in detention to silence protest and hide theÌýabuses that occurÌýin these facilities.
It is time to end the crime of indefinite detention,Ìýfree the refugees and bring those still on Manus Island and NauraÌýto AustraliaÌýnow.
