Up to 100 people gathered outside Queensland state parliament to put the incoming government on notice that opposition to the Adani coal mine will be sustained until the project has been defeated.
Although the election results have not been finalised, it appears likely Annastacia Palaczuk's Labor will be returned to government, on the back of strong opposition to the mine and the pledge she made during the campaign to veto the federal government's proposed billion-dollar loan for the project. In key seats lost by the LNP, exit-polling conducted by GetUp showed that up to 70% of voters were opposed to government funding for the mine.
A range of groups making up the Stop Adani Alliance mobilised during the election campaign, with phone banking, door-knocking, and public profile-raising actions like protests, pickets and postering. They built on the exposé of the Adani company's business dealings aired on ABC's Four Corners and other forms of public scrutiny in the months before the election.
Speakers at the rally pledged to continue the campaign, while participants chanted, "Palaszczuk, we're here to stay, we'll make Adani go away."
