The聽Hobart City Council聽wants the聽30 refugees being held indefinitely in the Park聽Hotel in聽Melbourne聽to be freed. A聽successful 聽on January 31 authorised聽Lord Mayor Anna Reynolds to聽request federal and state governments resettle the聽refugees in Hobart.聽

The City is part of a network of .

Councillor Damon Thomas told the meeting it was a 鈥溾 that Australia鈥檚 immigration policies allowed the arbitrary detention of refugees. 鈥淲e as a nation should hang our heads in shame. Many of them have done more聽[time]聽than a prison will put you in for murder."

Liberal Party聽Councillors聽William Coats聽and Simon Behrakis聽voted against the motion, saying the resettlement of refugees in Hobart would be 鈥溾.

Lord Mayor dismissed this. 鈥淭o basically say we can鈥檛 [resettle the refugees in Hobart] because we can鈥檛 accommodate 30 people is a bit like saying we can鈥檛 accept any migrants or any internal migration into Hobart.鈥

The motion shows local governments can play a leadership聽role in promoting humane polices for refugees.

Refugee activist with聽聽Niko Leka told聽91自拍论坛聽that the Hobart declaration is聽significant because 鈥渋t represents the view of a community鈥澛爎ather than a political party.

Local councils have a history of taking action:聽Bega Valley Shire Council聽became a Welcome Town for Refugees聽in 2002聽and聽Newcastle聽became a聽聽in聽the same year.聽Leka said聽this developed into a movement and聽many regional centres like Newcastle have聽recently聽鈥溌爐hemselves as聽Welcome聽Towns聽or Refugee聽Welcome聽Zones鈥.

Regional聽communities聽have been important advocates for refugee聽rights. In聽Biloela,聽for example,聽locals have聽fought hard to get the聽Murugappan refugee family back home and be given permanent protection.

When local communities speak up for refugees, racism is broken down,聽Leka said, adding, it is聽always worth approaching councils to take a stand on human rights.
