Local communities are fighting to stop New South Wales Forestry Corporation from logging聽an area critical for koala connectivity and聽habitat on the NSW mid-north coast.聽Ben Radford聽reports.
A group of about 80 activists from across the state climbed the steep mountain slopes in the Rubicon State Forest in Victoria鈥檚 Central Highlands on June 9 to highlight one of Victoria鈥檚 largest logged areas.
The group held a 25 metre-long banner saying 鈥淪ave the Rubicon 鈥 Stop the Logging鈥 and a second 13 metre-long banner saying 鈥淔orests for Life Not Logging鈥 as they stood in the devastated landscape.
Federal and state governments are about to renew Regional Forest Agreements (RFAs) to prolong industrial logging across 2 million hectares of New South Wales native forests. It is expected that an additional 100,000 hectares of native forest will be re-zoned for clear felling.
RFA renewals and burning native forests for energy is will mean the end of native forests.
