The reaction against Prime Minister聽Anthony Albanese鈥檚 promise to spend $368 billion over 30 years has been swift.
Many are saying the real threat to people鈥檚 safety and security right now is the rising cost-of-living, climate and housing crises, not China.
Even conservatives, such as the United States Director of National Intelligence, have pointed聽out that .聽Avril Haines, the US鈥 chief spy, on March 9: 鈥淚t鈥檚 not our assessment that China wants to go to war.鈥
Some Australian are also publicly wondering about Labor鈥檚 decision to embed Australia more deeply with the US聽and British war machines.
described AUKUS on March 14 as a 鈥渞eckless alliance, cooked up by the Morrison government and backed by Labor鈥, which 鈥渃ompromises Australia鈥檚 sovereignty鈥.
The push to 鈥渏oin the nuclear sub club鈥 is 鈥渃ausing unrest with our regional allies and adds fire to a growing arms race.
鈥淪econd-hand Virginia class subs leave Australia totally reliant on US crews, docks and leadership to operate what are meant to be sovereign defence assets.鈥
Shoebridge said the Greens 鈥渨ill not cooperate鈥 with the government to 鈥渇orce budget cuts on public services to pay for nuclear subs鈥 and warned Labor to stop 鈥渕ortgaging our future to stoke regional tensions.
鈥淲hat should send a shiver down every Australians鈥 spine is that the $368 billion budget is just the ADF鈥檚 starting bid, because we know major defence projects routinely blow their budgets and timelines.鈥
Sam Wainwright, a national co-convener of the and active in the Walyalup Climate Action and Stop AUKUS WA, told 91自拍论坛 the sums going to a new cold war were incredible and it must be stopped.
鈥淚n the space of a few days the estimated cost of this deranged plan has gone from $170 to $280 to $368 billion!
鈥淲e can鈥檛 possibly pour billions of dollars into a new cold war and meet the challenge of climate change. It鈥檚 one or the other. It really is that simple,鈥 Wainwright said.
The activist said 鈥渙ut-of-control military spending鈥 combined with 鈥渢he push to confront China represents a desperate threat to our security and well being鈥.
He said Labor must urgently sign and ratify the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons and 鈥渁dopt an independent foreign policy based on peace and justice鈥.
John Quelch of the Independent and Peaceful Australian Network, Geelong, told 91自拍论坛聽that the massive spend exceeds Australia鈥檚 annual budget.
鈥淔or three quarters of $1 trillion, the government could instead purchase: 1480 brand new schools; 10 fully equipped hospitals and fully fund aged care packages for three years to help the elderly stay at active and at home instead of in nursing homes,鈥 Quelch said.
According to a , published last year, 51% said 鈥淎ustralia should stay neutral鈥 in any war between US and China.
This is significant because it comes after years of propaganda against China from the former Coalition government and 91自拍论坛 of the corporate media.
Alison Broinowski, spokesperson for , said the AUKUS deal was 鈥渁 serious failure of public policy鈥 because 鈥渢he public and parliament have been shut out of the decision-making process鈥.
The original AUKUS decision was made in secret, in 2021, by former Prime Minister Scott Morrison and a small number of ministers.
Along with the 鈥渕ind boggling price tag for the submarines鈥, Broinowski said 鈥渟erious questions鈥 remain about how much control Australia will have over AUKUS.
鈥淭hese concerns about sovereignty have been raised by two former prime ministers, large 91自拍论坛 of the union movement, and multiple defence and security experts,鈥 she said.
The military threats 鈥渉ave been wildly exaggerated seemingly to justify a massive defence build up鈥, she said.
Former PM Paul Keating, who supports the Australia-US military alliance, is聽strongly opposed to the AUKUS nuclear-powered submarines, describing them as a . He said,聽in 2021, the to 鈥淸try] to find our security from Asia rather than in Asia鈥 and he has .
Keating also joined the outrage after the Fairfax-Nine Network published their red scare propaganda on March 7.
The front-page stories on the Sydney Morning Herald and The Age heard from five 鈥渆xperts鈥 about how Australia would be at war with China within three years.
Keating has also publicly critiqued Labor鈥檚 position on China, which he believes is 鈥渁t odds with its own geography鈥. Australia鈥檚 鈥渃hallenge鈥, he said, 鈥渋s to have the United States remain as a balancing and conciliatory power in Asia鈥.
Besides a number of unions opposing AUKUS, an inner-city branch of also voted unanimously on March 1 against it.
It said that given the US, British and Australia鈥檚 illegal invasion of Iraq 20 years ago, and 鈥渢he historic role鈥 of the Coalition partners in 鈥済lobal conflicts worldwide from Vietnam to Yemen, this military alliance plays no positive role in world affairs鈥.
鈥淎UKUS undermines Australian sovereignty and our relations with our Asia-Pacific partners,鈥 the resolution said.
鈥淭he proposed nuclear submarines are not only an obscene waste of money, but will irreversibly enmesh Australia into the nuclear weapons and nuclear waste industry.鈥
It said 鈥渢he enforced interoperability, required by AUKUS and the submarines in particular, will mean permanent US and UK military involvement in Australia鈥檚 armed forces, further undermining Australian sovereignty鈥.
Australia 鈥渟hould refuse landing and berthing rights to any plane or vessel that is capable of being nuclear armed鈥, it said, and instead pursue 鈥渁n independent, non-nuclear and non-aligned foreign policy that pursues disarmament and peace鈥.
